Controversial influencer Andrew Tate has been arrested

The problematic Internet guru has been detained on charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming an organised crime group. Rumours are swirling on social media that his recent Twitter row with Greta Thunberg is what tipped off police to his presence in Romania.

Earlier this year, Andrew Tate made headlines when he was permanently removed from social media for posting flagrantly hateful content.

Domestic abuse charities have characterised Tate’s views as extreme misogyny, with the potential of radicalising his followers to commit violence against women and having a ‘real-world effect’.

It came after a surge in the popularity of his videos among impressionable young men, with reports that even teenage boys were successfully being swayed by his disturbing ideologies and radical bigotry.

Unfortunately, though most mainstream platforms remain free from Tate’s hyper-toxic ramblings, the ban didn’t last long on Twitter, where his account was reinstated as part of Elon Musk’s takeover of the company and corresponding ‘freedom of speech’ approach.

In the weeks since, Tate has gone to great lengths to make his presence felt. Most recently, by locking horns with renowned climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter, who he attempted to troll with a spiel about his large collection of emission-heavy cars.

‘Yes, please do enlighten me,’ she replied. ‘Email me at [email protected].’

This prompted the controversial influencer to release a two-minute clip that many are speculating is what tipped off police to his presence in Romania and helped lead to his arrest during the night.

Detained yesterday on charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming an organised crime group, Tate’s house was raided before he was taken into custody alongside his brother Tristan and two Romanian nationals.

They have been under investigation for several months now, after the US embassy received information that a 21-year-old American woman was being kept in their Bucharest mansion against her will.

‘The four suspects appear to have created an organised crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content meant to be seen on specialised websites for a cost,’ a spokesperson for the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) told the BBC.

‘Authorities have identified six victims. It is believed they were recruited by the British citizens, who misrepresented their intention to enter into a marriage/cohabitation relationship and the existence of genuine feelings of love.’

According to a statement from the prosecutors, Tate will be held for 24 hours for questioning.

As mentioned, it’s thought that his decision to engage in a public standoff with Thunberg is what disclosed his whereabouts.

Tate’s bizarre response, a clapback video in which he sits mocking her while smoking a cigar, involves the problematic Internet guru refusing to recycle the pizza boxes he’s delivered half-way through claims that Thunberg had not rattled him.

Because they were branded with the logo of a Romanian chain restaurant, the DIICOT – which had been waiting patiently for the Tate brothers to return to the country – were finally able to mobilise forces and descend upon their luxury villa.

‘This is what happens when you don’t recycle your pizza boxes,’ tweeted Greta this morning.
