Hi, I’m Sofia, and I’m the Deputy Editor & Media Partnership Manager at Thred. I also work closely with Gen Zers from around the world on exclusive articles and live interviews to promote the inspiring work they’re doing to make the world a better place.

During my time at the University of Exeter where I studied Spanish, I chose to spend my year abroad teaching English in Argentina and working as a journalist in Colombia before travelling across the continent with my camera.

Returning to the UK to pursue a Masters in International Journalism and an internship at National Geographic Traveller, I eventually found myself at Thred’s doors.

Now, I balance my time between obsessing over mushrooms, practising yoga in the middle of the office, and telling everyone about the new song I just learned to play on the bass guitar.

World at risk of descending into climate ‘doom loop’

A new report has warned that governments could soon be so overwhelmed with the consequences of the environmental crisis that they’re unable to address its root causes. Last week, two UK-based thinktanks released a report warning that the world is at risk of descending into what it calls a climate ‘doom loop’ if it doesn’t urgently re-align its priorities. Researchers from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR)...

1/3 of companies linked to deforestation are doing nothing to stop

According to the Forest 500 report, the organisations most reliant on the commodities responsible for deforestation are undermining global climate targets by failing to tackle the problem. Research by Global Canopy has found that a third of companies most linked to the destruction of tropical rainforests have not set a single policy to address the issue. This is despite a government commitment to end the practice made at COP26, where 141...

Gen Z rejects consumer culture with ‘de-influencing’

Instead of waxing lyrical about the latest launches, social media content creators are increasingly advising followers against purchases and calling criticism to cult-favourite products. Social media has always been synonymous with influencing. From the earliest stages of Instagram to our current, obsessive product pushing culture, nearly everyone who has ever used the internet has been swayed into buying something through influencer recommendations. Rising sea levels threaten ‘mass exodus on a biblical scale’

Addressing the UN security council on Tuesday, secretary general António Guterres warned that an increase in the pace at which sea levels are rising could spark a ‘mass exodus of entire populations on a biblical scale.’ The ominous statement follows...

Scientists create ‘vagina on a chip’ to advance sexual health research

Medical conditions affecting people with vulvas are notoriously understudied, but recent developments in the field suggest that things might finally be about to change. Scientists at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University have created the world’s first ‘vagina on a chip,’ a development that could prove significant in bridging several knowledge gaps on women’s sexual health. It comes amid growing furore towards prevailing bias in the medical sphere, which still...

New study suggests vaping damages the immune system

Though scientists still know little about the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on the human body, they just found the devices to be causing significant cellular and molecular changes in the lungs. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that vapes are all the rage. Replacing one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide, these days they are, quite literally, everywhere. Australia legalises therapeutic use of MDMA and psilocybin

In a world first, the country has officially recognised psychedelics as legitimate medicines. From July, authorised psychiatrists will be able to prescribe the drugs for treatment-resistant mental illnesses like post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. For decades, scientists and researchers have sought to prove the extraordinary medical potential of psychedelic drugs. Time and time again these mind-altering compounds have shown genuine promise in alleviating some of the most intractable (and expensive)...

Air pollution linked to an increased risk of mental illness

Air pollution linked to an increased risk of mental illness

According to a new study, people living in polluted areas with long-term exposure to even comparatively low levels of poor air quality are more likely to develop depression and anxiety.   Though most people would associate air pollution with the lungs, a new study has highlighted the impact it can also have on the mind. Writing for the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry, researchers have uncovered...

Opinion – stop excluding men from the body positivity conversation

Opinion – stop excluding men from the body positivity conversation

The archaic mindset that vulnerability isn’t ‘manly’ – particularly regarding image and self-esteem – should not be an excuse for rejecting men from our efforts to challenge unrealistic beauty standards. For as long as I’m able to remember, women have been the primary target of societal body critique. Permeating almost every aspect of my day-to-day life, I’ve frequently faced immense pressure from my peers, mainstream media, and even my own...
