Hi, I’m Sofia, and I’m the Deputy Editor & Media Partnership Manager at Thred. I also work closely with Gen Zers from around the world on exclusive articles and live interviews to promote the inspiring work they’re doing to make the world a better place.

During my time at the University of Exeter where I studied Spanish, I chose to spend my year abroad teaching English in Argentina and working as a journalist in Colombia before travelling across the continent with my camera.

Returning to the UK to pursue a Masters in International Journalism and an internship at National Geographic Traveller, I eventually found myself at Thred’s doors.

Now, I balance my time between obsessing over mushrooms, practising yoga in the middle of the office, and telling everyone about the new song I just learned to play on the bass guitar.

Could bioengineered beauty help the industry’s sustainability problem?

Can lab-grown ingredients and biotech brands solve the industry’s sustainability problem? Though we may be a long way off from 3D printing ourselves a new face every morning, there’s no denying that a new era of skincare is upon us. Namely a super-natural world of beauty in which bioengineered products are the norm. This is thanks to an ever-evolving industry that continues finding new ways of harnessing science and tech to...

Wildfires are devastating southern Europe

Wildfires are devastating southern Europe

Emergency services are working round the clock to control an ‘extreme’ blaze that’s been fuelled by strong winds and soaring heatwave temperatures. At least eight people have been killed and dozens hospitalised as a result of devastating wildfires in Turkey that have been raging for over a week. Investigators are currently trying to establish whether they were started deliberately, but evidence of this theory is scarce. The ‘extreme’ blaze, more likely...

Fashion’s copycat dilemma prevents industry-wide sustainability

Fashion’s copycat dilemma prevents industry-wide sustainability

Multibillion dollar companies like SHEIN are stealing, recreating, and cheaply mass producing the original ideas of independent designers. Until this stops, fast fashion lives on. In February, I asked where we were in our ongoing fight against fast fashion. Unfortunately, the answer was somewhat bleak. Though the number of people shopping consciously has soared in recent years – with Gen Z at the helm – the destructive industry’s demise appeared nowhere...

Opinion – why it’s time we ditched the phrase ‘summer body’

Perpetuating the toxic narrative that we need to alter our physical form for a season is having a serious toll on our mental health. Here’s why we should put the notion behind us once and for all. Trigger Warning: this article contains mention of eating disorders. Every year, as the warmer months roll in, an all-too-familiar phrase begins to permeate our conversations, our social media feeds, our television screens. Like clockwork, we’re...

Could non-surgical cosmetic work become prescription-only?

Could non-surgical cosmetic work become prescription-only?

MPs have warned that the ‘complete absence’ of regulations for non-surgical cosmetic treatment is dangerous and must end, with a call for new rules to be introduced.  In February, the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority ruled that social media influencers were, by law, to disclose when using beauty filters to promote products. This was not enough to protect the self-esteem of impressionable young people, however. Thanks to lockdowns and a 'Zoom boom',...

What is the latest strategy tackling violence against womxn in Britain?

What is the latest strategy tackling violence against womxn in Britain?

Months after Sarah Everard’s murder, the government has introduced new measures to ensure female safety. This may sound promising, but will it make a difference? Earlier this year, upon hearing of Sarah Everard’s disappearance, I wrote that more needed to be done to protect womxn everywhere. Her case not only provoked a potent reaction across the globe but unearthed far broader concerns regarding the abuse and violence we face on a...

If you’re worried about climate change you may have eco-anxiety

A widespread fear of environmental damage and ecological disaster is spurring a mental health crisis among Gen Z. What is it and how’s it being dealt with? Last month, we had the opportunity to speak with Clover Hogan, a 22-year-old activist who’s spent half her life researching the mental health implications of overwhelming concern regarding the current state of our planet. She informed us that, right now, more than 70%...

Researchers discover ‘forever chemicals’ in beauty products

Researchers discover ‘forever chemicals’ in beauty products

Researchers have found signs of toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances that can cause lasting damage to health and the environment in more than half of 231 product samples. When shopping for cosmetics, it’s pretty standard to see a lengthy list of ingredients on almost every item, but a recent study has uncovered that some of those listed might be more dangerous than you’d expect. PFAS (which stands for per- and...

Could 3D printing clothes be the future of fashion?

Could 3D printing clothes be the future of fashion?

An outlandish concept that successfully tackles growing concerns of sustainability, is being able to download and print out our garments the answer to over-consumption? When you think about constructing a three-dimensional object from a digital file, being able to print an entire outfit might not necessarily be the first thing that springs to mind. This new technology has been making waves across the fashion industry recently, however, provoking serious discussion around...

The Amazon is now releasing more CO2 than it can absorb

A new study has discovered that the rainforest is producing more than a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, a concerning sign for our fight against climate change. As though we didn’t already have enough to worry about in our ongoing quest to save the planet, scientists have just confirmed that the Amazon is now emitting more CO2 than it’s able to absorb. This, of course, has raised alarm bells...
