Instagram officially launches Twitter competitor Threads

With Elon Musk’s ownership of Twitter causing mounting problems, Instagram has swooped in with its own competitor, Threads. The app has officially launched.

Zuckerberg has officially launched his direct Twitter competitor Threads.

Largely based on a similar, endless feed of statuses, Threads directly moves over your Instagram profile and provides users with a parallel experience without the baggage of Elon Musk. There is no limit to how many statuses you can see, nor is there a premium account service.

You can post up to 500 characters at a time per post, and include images and tag others in a similar way to Twitter. Videos can be up to five minutes long, though there is currently no direct messaging, trending tab, or hashtags.

The competition between Musk and Zuckerberg has been fierce in recent weeks. There were bizarre talks about a cage fight between the two that eventually shut down upon Elon’s mother disapproving. Twitter has also been a more frustrating experience over the last few days as a limit was introduced that stops users from seeing new content after 600 tweets.

Zuckerberg tweeted a Spider-Man meme to poke fun at the situation. This was the first time his account had been used in fourteen years.

Threads has been met with significant buzz and excitement. It has reportedly already been downloaded 10 million times at the time of writing and both β€˜Threads’ and β€˜Goodbye Twitter’ are trending. It is evidence to suggest that a large number of Musk’s existing user base are looking for a viable alternative.

However, one major concern right now is that if you were to delete your Threads account, it would also delete your associated Instagram account. It’s worth keeping this in mind, as most who will be signing up will have used their original Instagram profile for years, some over a decade.

Meta – owner of Instagram and Threads – confirmed this via an interview with the BBC. It also added that β€˜this is something we’re working on. In the meantime, you can deactivate your Threads profile at any time.’ This will not interfere with your original Instagram account.

Threads is available in over 100 countries, including the US and UK. It is not available in the EU yet, however, due to some regulatory concerns.

So, is Threads here to stay? Right now it’s hard to tell whether it’ll stick. Zuckerberg has a history of overpromising and cutting corners, with Metaverse being the latest example. It’s perhaps more likely to succeed in comparison to other apps offering similar experiences due to Meta’s large infrastructure and resources. If anyone can dethrone Twitter, it’s probably Meta.

We have seen some novelty apps find widespread success and fumble the bag later. BeReal, for example, was a huge viral hit last summer but now sits at 173rd on the App Store. The user base has reportedly shrunk significantly in twelve months and looks unlikely to pick up again.

Threads is gaining traction right now, but whether it can maintain that user base is another story.
