Snapchat’s ‘Story Studio’ to make stories more professional than ever

Snapchat this week announced a slew of updates at the Snap Partner Summit, chief among them an overhaul of its Story editing software in the form of new standalone app Story Studio.

Snapchat is embracing its evolution from a once key player in social media messaging to mobile’s chief creative hub.

During its annual partnership summit this week, Snapchat announced a new project to conclude a year of what seems like endless updates – and this, potentially, could be the biggest of the lot.

Having released Voisey and Spotlight earlier in the year in an attempt to snag a portion of TikTok’s enormous userbase, Snapchat is now set to release a standalone app called Story Studio for iOS.

With Snapchat recognising around 75% of its young community has persisted with the platform to make use of the creative toolset it offers, developers are striving to deliver the biggest and best editing software available on social media. It goes without saying, that’s no small feat.

To Snapchat’s credit, it does sound mighty impressive.

Story Studio is said to offer live insights of what’s trending on Snapchat – including specifics like popular lenses, sounds, and topics – allowing users to capitalise on the biggest trends.

From here creators can trim their shots with frame precise editing, adding AR filters, stickers, and other visual elements along the way.

Judging the rate at which updates are chucked out on Snapchat, you can bet the filter options will grow relentlessly over the next few years too.

In the promos, Snapchat are also making damn sure everyone knows it’s one of only a few platforms with licensed music catalogues. How’s that shade TikTok?

As is customary with editing on Snapchat, once all features have been made us of and videos are complete, you can share them straight to Snapchat stories or Spotlight. Yes, you can also save them on your camera roll.

A little bizarrely, Snapchat not only seems resigned to users using its content across platforms, but is actively encouraging it here. So don’t feel guilty.

Smartly opting against the use of Snapchat watermarks on Story Studio content, seniors of the app are no doubt hoping it’ll give their new product the edge over competitors like Reels and TikTok.

What we can bank on now is young users will take to Story Studio like ducks to water. By upping the game in terms of creativity, yet keeping the editing process familiar and accessible, it’s all but sure to win over Gen Z.

In an age where there are so many important causes being championed by young people, creators and influencers want the tone and quality of their content to reflect their message.

With comfortably the most wide-ranging artistic options available (and free of watermarks), Story Studio will make seemingly ‘off-the-cuff’ content appear more professional. Not everyone has the time for a Premier Pro guide, unfortunately.

The superseding message to take away here, is young creatives are serious about all forms of their content these days. Story Studio is providing them with the chance to show as much.
