San Diego Comic-Con goes ahead without Hollywood star power

The pinnacle of geek fandom, the San Diego Comic-Con, has finally gotten back underway after a two-year Covid hiatus. Due to ongoing actor strikes, however, star power will not be a key draw at this convention.

Seriously, no A-list actors at the San Diego Comic-Con! [flips table covered in POP! figures]

After a two year hiatus, the globally renowned San Diego Comic-Con is back underway over the next few days.

Approximately 135,000 movie buffs and comic book fans are in attendance, but none will set out their stool overnight for a place at the conventionโ€™s famed H Hall; where Marvel, DC, and other studios have made their biggest surprise announcements over the years.

This is due to the escalating stand-off in Hollywood between talent and institutions over pay and image rights.

The Writers Guild of America has been on strike for almost three months and was joined by the Screen Actors Guild last week. Visual effects artists are scavenging for work and the prospect of a long-term shutdown looms for the first time in six decades. Itโ€™s a scary time for fans of the silver screen.

Those who had predicted an ensuing crisis for Comic-Con 2023, however, will have to eat humble pie. Despite a distinct lack of star power, the conference appears to have regained an essence of geek fandom at grass-roots โ€“ the like of which hasnโ€™t been seen since Hollywood studios hopped on-board as a marketing opportunity in the noughties.

Prior to actors strikes hitting the mainstream, Marvel, Netflix, Universal, and Sony had already opted to sit Comic-Con out. This is probably because an increasing number of studios and media outlets feel that holding their own events is more effective and lucrative.

Just look at Netflixโ€™s Tudum, DC Fandome, and Disneyโ€™s Investor Day, for example.

Much in the same way that E3 has dispersed into a handful of studio showcases, we could be seeing the beginning of the end for Comic-Con as a holistic boon for TV and film giants.

Nevertheless, the exodus of A-list faces and surprise announcements has done little to thwart the appetite and buzz surrounding the event. Just look at how jam-packed the schedule is and how diverse the offerings are every hour.

Hollywood undoubtedly provided a cool edge to Comic-Con, but 2023โ€™s outing shows itโ€™s far from the be-all and end-all. The H Hall event was still sold out months in advance, and people seem perfectly satisfied with the emphasis turned back on comics, collectibles, and cosplay.

Tom Cruise probably wonโ€™t be interrupting any showcases this year, but there will be plenty of Mavericks swanning around regardless.
