Netflix is set to host new indie animation series ‘Digital Circus’

A small step for streaming services, a big step for indie animation.

Digital Circus is an Australian-made animated web series produced by Glitch Productions. This series tells the story of a group of humans trapped in a digital world who are pursued by an evil Artificial Intelligence.

Digital Circus gained its popularity through a pilot episode that was posted on the Glitch youtube account in October of last year. It has amassed 346 million views in less than a year.

In addition to the pilot, two other episodes have been released. The third is on the way, planned to premiere on October 4th.

Commotion began on social media after leaks emerged on the Netflix application.

Some netizens found the trailer and the profile of the series while exploring the app, expressing their mixed opinions.

While some fans of the series pointed out that the series is a big step for independent animation, others expressed their discontent and concern that the series would lose its essence through partnering with a big platform like Netflix.

Last weekend the production house made two announcements through their X account.

On September 21st, they announced that episode number one of this series will be converted into manga format and published in Japan by Corocoro magazine.

On the 22nd, they officially confirmed the arrival of the show on Netflix.

They offered some clarifications to resolve the concerns of their fans, explaining that they maintain full control of the show as well as the creative rights to the project.

They noted that the series will continue to be financed independently, as it has been so far which is through official merchandise, they also announced their decision that the episodes will always be released first on the YouTube platform even though they will be available on both Netflix and YouTube continuously.

While it’s still unclear what benefit that Netflix gets from hosting this series on its platform, we do know that it is giving a great opportunity to indie animation.

By opening its platform, it is exposing many more people to this type of animation and gives hope for the future of the indie animation industry as more streaming platforms may follow in their footsteps.

Independent animators could be offered more opportunities, regardless of not coming from large or popular production houses.
