#HomeCouture is the fabulously extra DIY trend making waves on the web right now

Turning bed sheets into Balenciaga is the new trend taking over Instagram at the moment, providing some much-needed comic relief amidst the global pandemic.

Asย the world comes to terms with the fact that staying indoors hasย become our reality for the foreseeable future, more and more people are taking to social media to share their ideasย andย startย new trends. Well, if youโ€™reย bored andย looking for something to do, fear not because avantgarde-fashion or โ€˜#HomeCoutureโ€™ย asย Instagram calls it, is the latest creative outlet for those seeking toย entertain themselves during lockdown.ย

In the wake of news that the upcoming couture season hasย been cancelled, those who take great pleasure in seeing fashionโ€™s most stunning (and often pretty whacky) creations twice a year will undoubtedly be feeling rather down.ย ย

Acknowledging this,ย Georgeย Serventi (skipdin) โ€“ย fashion journalist, illustrator and self-proclaimed meme lord โ€“ came up with #HomeCoutureย which invites users to submit unique, DIY interpretations of theirย favouriteย looks to his account, and by Jove is it providing some much-needed comic relief in these difficult times.ย ย

โ€˜The idea is that Quarantine Queens across the world should doll themselves up, Cinderella style, with scouring pad ball gowns, toilet roll palazzo pants and saucepan fascinators,โ€™ he says. โ€˜People are getting pretty creative with their bedding; I guess most of us are spending the 9-5 under a duvet so it’s easy to find inspiration between the sheets!โ€™ย

So far,ย Serventiย and his friends have re-created a variety of runway looks inspired by some of fashionโ€™s most forward-thinking talents.ย Using only what they have lying around their houses, the resulting creations have ranged from a take onย John Gallianoโ€™sย Maisonย Margiela collection made with torn-up cardboard boxes, giant, sculptural dresses designed to represent Comme des Garรงons, and soda-can hair rollers throwing it back to Alexander McQueenโ€™s iconic 2009 Horn of Plenty show (to name a few).

โ€˜Materials we all have at home like tin foil,ย binย bags, newspaper, and cellophane work surprisingly well,โ€™ he adds. โ€˜Butย soย do Pot Noodles and broken plates.โ€™ย

While we all search for a little escapism, looking at fashion through a more playful lens seems like the way to go.ย Serventiย and his friends are affectionately poking at the industryโ€™s most overblown moments and in my opinion, itโ€™s a genius way of bringing people together.ย ย ย

โ€˜The fashion industry is definitely guilty of taking itself too seriously, but whatโ€™s great about #HomeCoutureย is weโ€™re all in it together โ€“ taking the piss out of ourselves, each other, and fashion at large,โ€™ he says. โ€˜The more you root around the Vogue Runway archive the more bizarre, unwearable, and amazing looks you find.โ€™ย

Basically, if youโ€™re looking to wear something other than sweatpants and a t-shirt this week, why not give #HomeCoutureย a go? I must say, Iโ€™m quite relieved I finally have a use forย all those old pillowcases Iโ€™ve been storing in my laundry closet for years. Hereโ€™s hoping I go viral.ย ย
