Last week, Canadian singer Nelly Furtado announced on social media that she would ‘step away from performance for the foreseeable future’ after returning from a seven-year hiatus. Fans are speculating that body-shamers may have caused her to make the decision.
Throughout her career, Canadian singer Nelly Furtado has graced her fans with some absolute timeless bangers. From her Grammy winning debut single ‘I’m Like a Bird’ to more upbeat tracks like ‘Promiscuous’ and ‘Maneater,’ Furtado’s tracks have remained in the musical rotation of bars, clubs, and listener’s playlists for nearly two decades.
The latter two tracks enjoyed a recent resurgence among a new generation of listeners, thanks to its use on social media posts on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. It was this renewed attention that brought Furtado out of a seven-year performing hiatus in 2024.
‘I really feel like I was called back to the industry by the industry,’ Furtado told Grammy.com after announcing her decision to return to the stage. ‘I would go out and hear my songs played before arena shows of other artists, and at house parties and clubs… I thought, this can only be remixed so many times, I better go make some new stuff.’
But just a year later, off the back of her Better Than Ever summer festival tour, Nelly Furtado has announced that she will be stepping away from the stage ‘for the foreseeable future,’ explaining that she will be venturing into other ventures that ‘better suit this next phase of [her] life’.
Based on comments made by the singer throughout the year, both on stage and in social media posts, fans are now speculating that body-shamers have made 46-year-old Furtado want to take a long-term step away from the lime light.
The suspicion that body-shamers are the cause of Furtado’s retreat are not unfounded, as the topic has been touched on multiple times by the singer this year.
At the start of 2025, Furtado addressed false claims about her appearance in an Instagram post. The caption read: ‘For whoever cares, I have never had any face or body surgeries or augmentation, besides for veneers on the top row of my teeth, quite recently. So far, I have not had any face or lip injections or fillers of any kind.’
The singer also encouraged her fans to ‘celebrate [their] individuality’ and be comfortable with what they see in the mirror, while also acknowledging that it’s completely fine to want to change things about their appearance, too.
The post included bikini selfies with a body-positive message, which wished her followers a ‘body neutral 2025’ and expressing renewed ‘levels of self -love and genuine confidence from within’.
