TikTok may be back but influencers are not

How far will content creators go for fame and money? Ahead of the short-lived TikTok ban, audiences found out with the “one more secret” trend.Β

Credibility on social media has always been a hot topic.Β

While some people trust that the influencers they follow maintain their integrity despite their fame, there are others who doubt influencers’ every move.

On the eve of TikTok’s short-lived demise, multiple influencers went viral for participating in the “one more secret” trend as they prepared to say goodbye to the platform.

Among those “secrets” were harmless things, such as Duolingo making a face reveal or influencers who finally told the truth about their most viral controversies of the past years.

For the most part, creators leveraged the trend as an opportunity to get closer to their community and to promote the migration of followers from one platform to another.

But with the TikTok ban looming, many creators believe it would mark the end of their career on social media and admitted to some of their content being fake or staged.Β

Among the most controversial were fitness influencers who admitted that their great physiques were the result of cosmetic operations, and that they never did the workout routines they recommended.

Now that TikTok is back, many secret-spilling creators have been avoiding the topic.

A large number of influencers have deleted their confessions, while others have been attempting to spin the content into something more engaging.

Others are continuing to make more confessions in attempts to rebrand themselves as honest and authentic.Β

As with any controversial issue, the response to these tactics has been divided.Β

Many TikTok users have come to the defence of influencers, saying that audience members should always assume that what the content they are watching is for social media and is likely never 100 percent real.Β

Opponents say that influencers should have a certain control over what they promote, and above all, they have a responsibility to create with integrity and uphold honesty with their large followings.Β

But of course, it’s up to you to decide which side you are on.

Do you think this will be the end of influencer marketing or will it spark a purge of content creators that makes space for new faces and concepts?

Personally, I do believe that people will try to be more cautious with the content they consume, specifically when it comes to fitness and beauty creators and trends.Β

On the other hand, I also believe that we can never be too careful.

We should always remain skeptical and critical of the content we see online, because sooner or later there will be another big influencer lying to us.
