Will Snapchat’s tweet integration up cross-connectivity on social media?

Twitter has revealed iOS users can now display tweets within their Snapchat Stories. Is this the beginning of social platforms playing nice?

In a single move sure to freshen up Twitter’s user base and simultaneously bring a more mature audience to Snapchat, iOS users will now be able to display clickable tweet previews within their Snapchat Stories.

Naturally, social media platforms rarely play nice. Each big player – whether we’re talking Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, or Instagram – prefers to keep users within their own eco-system at all costs, without bouncing them away to a rival. Site traffic equals profit, after all.

In this rare instance though, Twitter has managed to secure a shrewd deal that will nab a hefty slice of an entirely new audience and may become a trailblazer for increased connectivity across social media platforms in general.

If you’re continuing to use Snapchat as your chief messaging service, making use of the new feature is really straightforward. Simply hit the share icon on a tweet, select Snapchat at the bottom of the share menu to create a clickable sticker, adjust the size and location of the tweet in the context of your Snap Story, and upload as normal. Once shared, anyone who clicks the tweet preview on Snapchat will be linked to Twitter to see the extended discussion. Simples.

It will be really interesting, firstly to see if Snapchat’s Gen Z heavy userbase will take to using the new feature at all, and secondly, how they will make best use of the feature. Research has found that 75% of Snapchat’s current userbase has persisted with the app solely to make use of its constantly evolving AR effects, and for those people, Twitter integration probably won’t add heaps of value.

On the other hand, while Gen Z are hugely creative, they’re also real hot on staying abreast of political issues and as ‘digital natives,’ are obsessed with researching topics online. See where this this is going?

Over the years Twitter has risen to prominence as the place for minute-by-minute topical conversation and reactionary public opinion, and in that sense the platform is a match made in heaven for young people looking to express their views within the zeitgeist. It could also lead to more sophisticated content than we’ve been accustomed to on Snapchat.

In a broader sense, the prospect of social media sites becoming more integrated is really exciting. Granted that in the early days, there was probably a notable benefit to keeping users in house, but in the current landscape people are constantly sharing across social platforms anyway.

Quickly screenshotting or screen recording content to pop a tile from Instagram to WhatsApp, or to show a tweet in Facebook Messenger really isn’t much of a hassle, and it’s good to see that in that respect social media chiefs are no longer burying their heads in the sand.

For now, the option is only available on iOS, but should it take off (as we’re expecting) we’ll likely see a full roll out in early 2021.
