Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has launched a stand-alone AI app that was previously only accessible across Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook called ‘Meta AI.’ It is aimed at rivalling ChatGPT and other similar products.
Meta continues to push forward with its plans to utilise AI and compete with industry leaders such as ChatGPT and Midjourney.
Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, has launched a standalone AI app that provides users with assistance and information. It uses text-based prompts and operates very similarly to other competitors within the sector.
Unsurprisingly, the new service is called ‘Meta AI’ and was built using the company’s large language model Llama 4.
The AI model had previously been integrated into Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, but can now be accessed as a singular service without having to use another platform. This puts it in more direct competition with ChatGPT.
In a Facebook post, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, ‘this is the beginning of what’s going to be a long journey to build this out.’ He added that almost one billion people are currently using Meta AI across all of the company’s different platforms.
While Facebook may be eager to stress that more will be added further down the line, the app already features a ‘discovery feed’ where users can see how others have used the AI. The model reportedly personalises individual queries based on information already shared by consumers on other platforms.
However, Meta AI’s standalone app reportedly does not have access to the web or real-time information just yet.
Meta’s pivot toward AI has come at the expense of Zuckerberg’s once-championed ‘Metaverse,’ which by all metrics has essentially disappeared from the company’s future strategies.
