Exploring the cost of the pursuit of beauty

In an era where people are willing to do anything to fit in, health has become a secondary priority.

If you are a woman, you may have heard the phrase ‘beauty is pain’.

This phrase is usually accompanied by a comment suggesting we change something about our physical appearance to ‘look better’.

Society has been led to an era where we believe that beauty can only be achieved through the use of hundreds of skincare products, multiple aesthetic operations, fillers, Botox, and hair treatments.

These procedures are sold to us as only slightly invasive and likely reversible, but is this true?

Hyaluronic acid: a not-so-reversible procedure

For years we were told that if you needed a quick ‘fix’, injectable hyaluronic acid was the way to go, as it was less invasive than Botox and could dissolve over time.

A few months ago, a doctor in California went viral for performing a CT scan on one of his clients who had been receiving this type of injection for years.

It it was discovered that – aside from besides growing in more than double its size in volume  – this type of treatment can even block the lymphatic system.

Doctors are now skeptical of the true longevity of hyaluronic acid injectables, reminding patients that it may not ever completely dissolve.

Hair straightening: a road to kidney injury

Straight hair is one of the biggest beauty standards in our society.

Getting a little treatment to help reduce time spent getting ready in the morning is something we all want to do.

However, after doctors went viral on social media after sharing their controversial opinions on popular hair straightening treatments, which they said were harmful to human health in the long term.

Several studies then became public knowledge, showing that the use of this type of treatment is linked to renal failure and different types of cancer.

Prof. @Howard Forman discusses why you should avoid hair-straightening products containing glyoxylic acid. “There’s almost no doubt that this injures the kidneys,” he says on the April 4 episode of the #HealthAndVeritas podcast. #glyoxylicacid #HairStraightening #Hair #hairtok #PublicHealth #Research

Without a doubt, these aesthetic procedures are a topic of great importance, with consequences that have huge impacts on our health.

There needs to be more research conducted before beauty treatments are sold to us in order to prevent customers finding out about the health consequences years later.

In the end, trends and beauty standards come and go.

If you are thinking of having a cosmetic procedure done, it’s important to investigate and evaluate it carefully, putting your health first, and being completely sure you want it – because almost anything done to our bodies is permanent.

But even after reading this, would you dare to undergo any of these procedures or treatments?
