because why is oxtail now everywhere?
📱 The tech corner
In our last newsletter we spoke about AI coming to our iPhones. The question is, should we trust Apple when its AI tool is capable of scanning through all of our text messages, emails, and social media DMs? While the tech giant says it has gone above and beyond to eliminate risks we know about, the reality is that we don’t yet know enough about the pitfalls of AI – and Apple’s way of deploying it.
Film photography is on the rise at women’s football games – huck magazine
Who doesn’t love the look of film photos? Their retro and authentic feel offers a breath of fresh air as we grow tired of the ultra-perfect images plastered across social media and taken with the latest $1000+ smartphone. Speaking to huck magazine, Photographers Harriet Duffy and Raiyan Rafiq explain why there’s a resurgence in vintage film photography and why women’s football clubs like Arsenal are all over it. Gorgeous pictures included, btw!
Coldplay has set the bar for the world’s most eco-friendly tour – thred.
Building power-producing dance floors and electricity-generating stationary bikes for its concerts, Coldplay has used green technology to get their world tour closer to being carbon-neutral. In some great news, the band surpassed the goal of reducing their tour’s carbon footprint by half, with third-party investigations confirming a 59 percent decrease in greenhouse gas emissions! Viva la vida, indeed.
🍕 Food for thought
Oxtail, once shunned as a meat by-product typically used in Jamaican stews, Vietnamese broth, and American South cuisines is now finding itself inside tacos, grilled cheeses, smash burgers, and on top of pizzas in America. This is all thanks to high-profile chefs working it into their upscale menus in affluent areas. Now a ‘viral ingredient’, oxtail’s price has nearly tripled in recent years, with the NYT stating that oxtail’s average wholesale price last month was $14.18, compared with $5.99 in April 2015. Yikes.
Kourtney Kardashian’s latest supplement is an appetite suppressant – thred.
The latest release in Kourtney Kardashian’s supplement line is called ‘Lemme Curb’. Announcing its arrival, the brand highlighted that the product has been built on ‘clinically studied ingredients’ to help with diet issues like ‘unwanted cravings’ and ‘appetite regulation’. It’s 2024 – aren’t we over this? Bogus health claims aside, it’s giving Ozempic.
Our avocado obsession is driving organised crime – thred.
I can barely eat an avocado these days without feeling guilty as it is (producing a kilo of them requires 2,000 litres of water!) but now they’re being linked to organised crime in Mexico. With so much money to be made in these green fruits, cartels are forcibly taking over farms, murdering people to gain access to safeguarded lands, and are clearing large forests to grow them.
💚 A dose of the good stuff
Austria abolished inheritance tax in 2008, but Marlene Engelhorn the 31-year-old daughter of owners of a $4.2 billion pharmaceutical company thought that was no bueno. So she called upon a group of fifty citizens to choose how she should redistribute her wealth. Amongst the recipients are organisations dedicated to affordable housing, women’s rights, and eradicating poverty. Hellllllll yeah girl.
It’s okay that you love beautiful things – The Conversation
Constantly thinking about aesthetics? Feeling superficial for wanting to be surrounded by things that just look and feel good? It’s okay, babe. It’s science. Research shows that beauty is more important than we realise, with better-designed logos helping us to process things faster and good smelling (and looking) environments being capable of boosting our mood.
Ben & Jerry’s is asking you to step up your activism game – thred.
The globally-loved ice cream company was once described by its former chairman as a ‘social justice organisation that sells ice cream to be able to fuel its advocacy work’. In its latest campaign, it’s urging people everywhere to stand up for their values and Make Some Motherchunkin’ Change! by any means necessary. Just don’t get arrested, obviously.
