Gen Z rejoining the EU + TikTok nuns are blowing up

we’re going viral, sister

If you’re an older Gen Zer like myself (I’m a borderline millennial, I’ll be honest), you may remember the absolute shock of the Brexit vote way back in 2016.

We live in an era of constant political upset these days, what with Keir Starmer being booted from office this week, Donald Trump continuing to baffle overseas, and ex-Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau constantly making tabloid headlines for his cutesy romance with Katy Perry. Before all that, though, there was a period of relative stability in the UK, where most assumed that things would kind of…just…plod along like usual.

For younger Gen Zers and Gen Alpha, a constant circus wheel of chaos has become standard political practice; social media has upended how parties connect with voters, and misinformation is rife. Brexit – and, by extension, the rise of MAGA – was perhaps the first very real, very obvious example of online echochambers and dishonest campaign tactics disrupting the wheels of democracy.

Now, a decade on, Gen Z seemingly want to reverse Brexit and demand a fresh vote, at least according to a poll exclusively commissioned by The Guardian this week. Thinktank More in Common conducted the research, stating that 60% of 18- to 28-year-olds would rejoin the EU if given the opportunity, compared to only 9% that would vote to stay out. Of those who would actually cast a ballot in a second referendum, 81% would be pro-EU. Those are some serious numbers, folks.

There seems to be a widespread consensus among young people that Brexit has fundamentally failed to deliver on the promises it parroted in 2016. It’s important to note that most Gen Zers were too young to actually have a say during the referendum, despite being disproportionately affected by the outcome. Pollster Peter Kellner argues too that the original pro-Brexit majority is largely non-existent today, given that more than 6 million British people have died in the ten years since. We may be living in an anti-Brexit majority while still peddling a decision that hasn’t worked for…well, anyone.

Whichever side of the political fence you fall, it’s hard to argue that Gen Z hasn’t been sidelined for the sake of older voters.

They’re continually ignored and dismissed, with student loans still spiralling, community spaces vanishing, and now they can’t even visit YouTube without downloading a VPN. Parents might point to low voting turnouts among young people, but what do they expect when they’re never given any reason to bother? Even after a decade, they won’t be granted a second vote on the EU, despite the evidence that things aren’t working. In many ways, Brexit’s legacy is one of bitterness and nostalgic delusion from a bygone generation – at least for anyone under the age of thirty.

🥵 Hot ‘n’ heavy climate change heatwaves

Why are we seeing this 40°C heatwave, and is it a sign of things to come? – itv

If you live in the UK or Europe, you’re probably sweltering right now or sitting near an overworked fan, at the very least. Temperatures are set to soar to nearly 40°C in some places this week, shattering previous records and setting a new precedent for summer heatwaves. With climate change becoming increasingly pressing and pervasive, we should expect more unusual weather and earlier temperature peaks. This is likely only the beginning, and we’ll need better systems in place to combat routine 40°C heat. Stay cool out there, folks. Read more

‘Climate change is a form of oppression’: the voices affected most by environmental crisis – the guardian

Speaking of climate change, a new HBO documentary called ‘The Welcome Table,’ directed by Josh Fox, brings attention to those who have been most affected by the crisis so far. Migrants from six continents sit down together and share their stories, offering a stark warning as to the realities that will soon be disrupting the lives of approximately one in three people, according to an article published by PNAS. This feature by The Guardian takes a look at some of Fox’s processes while directing, and shines a light on some of the most damaged areas of the world right now. Read more

🎵 Multicultural music offers up a little hope

Backstage at Gorillaz’ epic, one-off stadium show: ‘The vibe is ridiculous’  – bbc

With right-wing nationalism seemingly on the rise across Europe and the US, celebrating multiculturalism and diversity feels more important than ever. That sentiment was felt at last weekend’s Gorillaz stadium show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, which featured a wide array of genres and musical styles while championing socialism. This piece by the BBC takes a deep dive into the many, many different artists that made guest appearances across the two-and-a-half-hour setlist. I should know, as I was actually there in person! That’s probably a bit of an insufferable flex, but still. Read more

New nightclub takes over former home of Soho’s G-A-Y – mixmag

Now, I know you might be wondering: why is a random club opening featured on The Common Thred? London’s nightlife, club, and pub scene has taken a serious hit over the last decade or so, thanks to the pandemic and changing Gen Z behaviours that are making nights out far less profitable. There has been serious concern that enjoying ourselves and staying out late might be a thing of the past, especially as young people fixate on perfectionism and ultra-healthy living. Still, this new LGBTQ+ friendly club, called Coven, is a positive sign that boozing and dancing might still be on the cards for the foreseeable future. It is replacing G-A-Y, a legendary venue that had stayed open for 22 years until last year. Read more

TikTok’s 2026 trend report: everything you need to know – brandnation
Wondering what to make of all the short-form video content on TikTok this year? Brandnation’s latest report takes a look at what’s making the platform tick (sorry) right now, with insights into Gen Z attitudes. One of the biggest takeaways is that escapism and fantasy appear to be fading on the platform, with less focus on aesthetics and perfect, orchestrated ‘routine’ videos falling out of favour. Young people are likely to engage with brands that foster authentic communities, and comment-driven content is outperforming polished messaging. Lo-fi, genuine vibes appear to be the way forward.
