RockCorps is giving Gen Z new apprenticeship opportunities

Partnering with big musicians including Pharrell Williams, Diddy, and Lady Gaga, RockCorps is offering teens apprenticeship and volunteering placements to help them boost their CVs.

If you’re a young person looking to get a foot on the career ladder, it can be hard to know where to start to get into an industry you really love, or how to bag yourself a worthwhile apprenticeship.

RockCorps was designed for this very reason, bringing brands and volunteer schemes together to offer tempting incentives for those who sign up. It was first founded in 2003 and has gone on to accept volunteer work from over 180,000 people for over 2,600 global charities, which is nothing to be scoffed at.

How does RockCorp work?

People who volunteer under the RockCorps scheme are given tickets to exclusive gigs and performances from big name musicians.

Since 2005 it has organised 55 concerts in 10 countries and has worked with a huge amount of top pop artists such as Rihanna, Maroon 5, Mark Ronson, The Script, AKON, and Smashing Pumpkins.

Volunteer work can range from improving public spaces with new coats of paint to turning old community centres into workable classrooms. Projects have been completed across six continents, making RockCorps a global initiative that anyone can get involved in.

Its latest venture is Apprentice Nation, an initiative that’s boosting public awareness of apprenticeship schemes and encouraging them as a genuine alternative to university.

What is Apprentice Nation?

Apprentice Nation works in a similar fashion to RockCorps’ usual volunteer schemes. The first gig was performed by alternative R&B artist 6LACK in May 2018 and was attended solely by those who signed up for an β€˜Action Day’. This involved meeting businesses and CEOs to learn about the best apprenticeship programmes available and how to get on board.

It’s all about educating young people on all of their options before they dive off down a path they’re not entirely clued up on. Too often educational institutions heavily push university degrees without exploring alternatives such as apprenticeships, which can sometimes offer more employable skills for far less money. Informing Gen Z on everything they can do is Apprentice Nation’s main goal.

It’s also teamed up with WhiteHat, a tech start-up that matches non-graduates aged 16-23 with apprenticeship opportunities working with big companies. Those who’ve signed up to WhiteHat have gone on to be employed at places such as Google, Warner Bros, and Burberry.

How can I get involved?

If all this sounds like something you’re interested in, you can sign up for Apprentice Nation here and visit the RockCorps website here. You just need to be a non-graduate under 23 and you’re all set to go!

Who knows, this could be the start of your career at a big tech company, and you might get the chance to see Lady Gaga in concert when those are allowed again. Everybody wins.
