Whoopi Goldberg launches women’s sport network

US comedian and television host Whoopi Goldberg has launched All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN), a new 24/7 global women’s sports channel.

Women have historically been excluded and discouraged from practicing sports.Β

During childhood, girls constantly hear phrases like β€˜you run like a girl’ and β€˜you kick like a girl’ – phrases which are usually made to mock them.Β

Despite efforts to stamp out damaging stereotypes, this level of discrimination against female athletes has yet to disappear, even on the professional level.Β

At least 40 percent of all sports played globally are played by women, but these matches make up a mere 4 percent of live media coverage.Β

Female athletes are also less likely to receive sponsorships, and the unwillingness of television stations to transmit these women’s sporting events because they do not consider them a lucrative enough.

Thanks to Whoopi Goldberg, American actor, comedian, author, and television personality, this will soon change.

On November 7th, Goldberg finally launched All Women’s Sport Network (AWSN)Β  – a broadcasting channel that has been 11 years in the making.

AWSN is a global channel that, as its name suggests, will broadcast exclusively women’s sporting events 24 hours a day.

Focusing only on athletes, Whoopi’s dream is to broadcast any sport in which a woman is involved, both to give visibility to these great sportswomen and to boost the visibility of sports that do not receive media coverage.

At the moment, AWSN is available in 65 countries through its website, but it is expected to soon reach more countries in Asia and the Middle East.

Its goal for 2025 is to broadcast a minimum of 2,000 hours of live sports.

Without a doubt, this is a giant step towards the recognition of high performance sportswomen.Β

It’s possible that it will become a motivating force for young girls and teenagers who are deciding to dedicate themselves to sports.

At the very least, it will offer a space to watch their favorite sportswomen perform.

With women is the future of sports, let’s hope television networks that dominate the field of sports will begin to appreciate and broadcast women’s sports in all its stages and forms.
