Outlook Festival tells attendees to ‘pay-what-you-can’ for tickets

As we enter festival season, some party people will be choosing between dipping into their overdraft or missing out on some of the best setlists of the summer. Outlook festival wants to help them out.

It seems like every time summer rolls around, tickets to our favourite festivals are more expensive than the year before.

Seriously, I remember paying about £70 for a full weekend ticket to my first time at Love Saves the Day, and now I’m financially better off buying a train ticket to Paris for the weekend. But we move.

This summer is no exception. The biggest difference though, is that everything else around festivals has risen in price, too. With the cost-of-living crisis ongoing, there’s a real possibility that young people are getting squeezed out of the party market.

Outlook Festival, which has taken place in Croatia since 2008, has said loud and clear ‘we can’t have that, can we?’ by starting an initiative which offers festival goers the option of buying discounted tickets for the very first time.

Those looking to purchase tickets at a reduced price are required to apply for the initiative by filling out a short online survey.

Discounts range from 10 percent to being 100 percent free, with a section to disclose why paying for full price tickets isn’t an option this year. Cost of living, student life, employment status, COVID, and ‘other’ are all listed as checkbox options.

Potential Outlook attendees are also given space to elaborate further on why they hope to receive a discounted ticket via textbox entry – only if they feel comfortable doing so.

Writing on Instagram, Outlook said: ‘As independent promoters, we are also feeling the impact of these economic challenges but believe that ensuring our audience can still come together and celebrate the music we are passionate about is crucial.’

‘In the current climate, we appreciate that some of our audience simply will not be able to afford full-price tickets to music events.’ The statement continued, ‘We ask for your honesty and support of one another and that you only apply if you genuinely cannot afford the current full price ticket.’

Am I just hungover, tired, and emotional or is this actually quite sweet?

For the very first time, Outlook is hosting a version of its festival here in the UK which will run from June 30th to July 3rd in Cheshire. Tickets for both the original festival in Croatia and the inaugural UK-based event are available on discount.

It’s unclear whether every applicant will receive the full discount they’re after, but one thing is for certain: Outlook festival has passed the vibe check.
