Let’s talk about MEXCLA Spotify: Palenque, Feria y Cotorreo

The festival, organised by the music streaming platform Spotify, was a celebration of Mexican artists, culture, and tradition.Β

Last weekend – November 2nd and 3rd – the MEXCLA festival organized by Spotify took place. It had a 100 percent Mexican lineup, becoming the first festival of its kind in the country.

According to Spotify, the streams of Mexican artists have increased 100 percent year on year since 2013, making it one of the fastest-growing genres globally.

Gen Z is contributing to this increase, as young people reportedly listen to 36 percent more artists per month than any other generation.

Not only did Spotify celebrate Mexican musicians, but they also invited some of the country’s most viral podcasters to perform live shows or do the voiceover for one of the guided events.

The whole festival revolved around the celebration of Mexico with little nods to local culture and how music is enjoyed in the country. As the festival’s name suggests, the event followed the β€œferia del pueblo” or as called in English β€œvillage fair” format.

The most memorable celebrations of Mexican music and culture could be found in the use of circular stages (inspired by palenques) andΒ a diverse musical offering as often happens in expo ganaderas.

There was also a karaoke session in the back of a truck with references to popular music videos, and a house of horrors guided by some of the most popular horror podcasters.

Finally, there was a contest held to allow new artists to gain exposure.Β

β€œMi primer escenario” which translates to β€˜My First Stage’ was a contest organized with the idea of giving them the opportunity to be on their first big stage, and to share their music with a more diverse audience.

The contest had simple rules, be over 18 years old, live in Mexico, have a Spotify profile with at least 3 songs, and have less than 200,000 monthly listeners, the winner was chosen based on the majority of votes, this time the winner was Mia Salinas, who opened the festival.
