Katy Perry says online criticism made her feel like ‘human piñata’

Singer Katy Perry has responded to the comments made against her for tour, music and space stunt with Blue Origin. She posted on Instagram that the experience has made her regard the internet as a ‘dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed people.’

Katy Perry has taken to Instagram to comment on the criticism she has recently received from the public.

Following a disastrous album rollout last year with lead single ‘Woman’s World,’ the singer was flamed online and failed to make a commercial impact. She then went on to be involved with a Blue Origin space flight, where videos of her facing an in-flight camera and holding a daisy went viral for all the wrong reasons.

She was criticised for being out of touch, hypocritical, and insincere. We wrote about the topic extensively and Perry became the subject of countless think pieces and discussions.

Responding to all the buzz, Perry said that she had felt like a ‘human piñata,’ and described the internet as a ‘dumping ground for unhinged and unhealed people.’ She also stated that she’d done a ‘lot of work’ on ‘understanding who she is.’

She added: ‘I’m not perfect, and I actually have omitted that word from my vocabulary. I’m on a human journey playing the game of life with an audience of many, and sometimes I fall.’

It’s worth noting that the singer is currently on tour. The first few clips of her dancing and choreography have been mocked online only days into her schedule.

Though we’d never support targeted, online hate at any individual or artist, it’s not hard to see how Perry became entangled in backlash after backlash.

Her ‘feminist’ anthem from her latest record was co-produced by Dr Luke, a man accused of sexual assault and harassment.

Similarly, Blue Origin’s space flight was a demonstration of wealthy privilege and an environmental catastrophe, during a time where the climate crisis is reaching a tipping point and many people can’t afford basic items.

Having to tackle such widespread anger must be a challenge for Perry, and the public has become more socially aware of the tole that celebrity scrutiny can have on one’s mental health.

But Perry keeps putting herself in positions that make it hard to root for her – particularly if you’re struggling to make ends meet.

Perhaps her experience will serve as a cautionary tale for other celebrities who are thinking of pulling off massive space stunts for the sake of marketing. Though we wouldn’t say to hold your breath.
