Jamie Watts

Editor in Chief London, UK

I’m Jamie (He/Him), the Editor in Chief at Thred. Keeping up with gaming, tech, and culture is my thing, but when away from my keyboard, you’ll probably find me wrapped around a large Tango ice blast at the latest mediocre horror flick. Follow me on Twitter, LinkedIn and drop me some ideas/feedback via email.

Hi, I’m Jamie, and I’m the Editor in Chief at Thred.

I studied Freelance Journalism at the British College of Journalism before heading straight into sports writer roles for several football news outlets. Following Manchester United’s decline, I had an immediate change of heart and generously decided to lend my talents to Thred. Now, as the tech and gaming buff, I spend my days obsessing over transformative innovations while grazing on fresh fruit and the occasional hobnob.

Often referred to as the resident cockney, I like to break up the daily hustle by irritating the rest of the office. I also love a headline image on Photoshop and get aroused by a tasty gradient.

The jig is up for students submitting AI assignments

The jig is up for students submitting AI assignments

If you’re a student who’s recently submitted work containing traces of AI, you’re probably cooked. It all seemed a little too good to be true, because it was. If you were a student who graduated in 2024, you were in the absolute sweet spot for generative AI. The explosion of chatbot generators like ChatGPT and Gemini didn’t initially coincide with plug-ins to detect where the tech had been used, and for a...

Elon Musk takes on Microsoft with AI operating system ‘Macrohard’

Elon Musk takes on Microsoft with AI operating system ‘Macrohard’

Elon Musk is going after big tech pillars like Microsoft with ‘Macrohard’, an operating system that will use AI agents to run all operations with minimal human involvement. Despite the tongue-in-cheek name, ‘Macrohard’ is very much real. Between going up against Keir Starmer’s immigration policies on X, running both Tesla and Space X, and legally challenging OpenAI for making ChatGPT ubiquitous with iPhones, it seems Elon Musk still has enough...

The UK nightclub scene is dying off rapidly

The UK nightclub scene is dying off rapidly

New figures from the Night Time Industries Association show that more than one in four late-night venues have closed down since 2020 in the UK. What are the factors at play? We have all inevitably had that banal chat with our elders about what a particular club venue was once called in their day. At this rate, however, that trend may die with Gen Alpha in the UK. During my own...

Jeanpormanove’s live death ignites outrage at Kick

French streamer Raphaël Graven, better known as Jeanpormanove, died on stream this week following a 10-day marathon in which he was subjected to sleep deprivation and physical abuse. How did Kick fail to recognise the danger? The death of French streamer Jeanpormanove has had a profound impact online, and it must spark serious accountability. The 46-year-old streamer passed during a live Kick broadcast and laid undiscovered for over 50 minutes beside...

Kai Cenat and the influencer charity controversy

Kai Cenat and the influencer charity controversy

Kai Cenat is under scrutiny again, but this time it’s not about setting off fireworks in his room or being shite at Elden Ring. It involves a school in Nigeria, and we’re trying to find the line between philanthropy and clout chasing. Earlier this year, Kai travelled to Nigeria with fellow creators Fanum and Duke Dennis. During the visit, he revealed he’d funded the construction of a new school,...

Gen Z are taking ‘situationship sabbaticals’

Nobody wants to be single forever, but Gen Z are weighing up the pros & cons and many have decided to take a ‘situationship sabbatical’. If you’ve recently realised that modern dating is essentially unpaid emotional labour with expensive cocktails, you may already be on a situationship sabbatical. It’s the hot new trend where Gen Z singles simply stop. Stop swiping, stop replying, and stop pretending to be interested in someone’s...

Sustainable aviation fuel loses all momentum with Trump’s cuts

Sustainable aviation fuel loses all momentum with Trump’s cuts

The One Big Beautiful Bill, passed in early July, has paralysed progress towards making aviation fuel mainstream in the US. What now? Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill has tarnished the President’s relationship with former chum Elon Musk, but there’s plenty of collateral that hasn’t received nearly as much attention. The Act, consistent of Trump’s ideologies packed into one neat and tidy file, has heavily targeted plans for renewable infrastructure. Already,

Study shows Gen Z aren’t paying for games anymore

Study shows Gen Z aren’t paying for games anymore

Gen Z spending on games has bottomed out, according to American research firm Circana. What are the factors at play? Do I really need electricity and hot water this month? Screw it, I’m getting the Switch 2. I’m being tongue and cheek with it, but this is the reality lived by just about every gamer Gen Zer that isn’t making six figures on Twitch or YouTube. Amid an ongoing cost of living...

Are Gen Z ageing faster than their parents?

Are Gen Z ageing faster than their parents?

Gen Z are known for tempering harmful habits like drinking or smoking, but are they destined to age poorly anyway? If you’re chronically online, you’ll have seen self-deprecating videos from Gen Zers talking about how they’re ageing worse than millennials, but is there any genuine credibility behind the jokes about receding hairlines? There might just be. Experts are increasingly warning of a ‘generational health drift,’ in which future cohorts may have...

Gen Z are serious about 6pm dinner

Gen Z are serious about 6pm dinner

Gen Z has always been less chaotic than social media would have you believe, and the cohort’s penchant for 6pm dinner proves it. In a lot of ways, Gen Zers are unapologetically square. They’re having less sex than millennials, they’re gymming or running more often, and they’re moderating drink and drugs more consciously. They’re also sat at the dining table ready to munch and glug as early as 6pm. For a generation perpetually...
