Founded by influencer and make-up-artist Jennifer Renée, Ivoree is the new beauty brand designed to provide for an underrepresented community: people with albinism.
The two ends of the beauty spectrum that have historically been least catered for – ebony and ivory – are seeing a surge of recognition in the inclusive beauty brands we’ve seen cropping up lately.
Globally, 1 person in 18,000 has albinism, but – aside from Fenty – there’s an evident lack of beauty products that cater for them. It’s a marginalised group that’s often left out in the beauty industry’s continued push for more inclusivity, but Jennifer Renée is here to change that with Ivoree Beauty, a new brand she launched early last month.
As someone with albinism herself, Renée acknowledges the need for more products to serve her community, particularly since the condition still isn’t represented in a normalised way. ‘It’s usually depicted with evil, magical, albino characters in films, but now there are fashion models with albinism, and it can be seen as beautiful,’ she says. ‘We still want to have the same selection of products in our shades and see more inclusion in marketing.’
Starting out as a make-up-artist, Renée found inspiration for Ivoree Beauty in a Facebook group of over a thousand members called ‘Albinism Beauty Chat’ where users would discuss the difficulties of finding products to match their skin tones and hair colour.
