Gen Z are yelling in public and pretending to auramax

The latest ‘auramaxxing’  TikTok and Instagram trend has Gen Z yelling in public before taking a misleading picture. It is hilarious and has unsurprisingly gone viral.

In need of a confidence boost? Looking to maximise your social aura? Forget the gym, have you tried yelling embarrassing nonsense in public to gain everyone’s attention for an Instagram picture?

This is the latest Gen Z trend currently making waves on TikTok and Instagram, as content creators embarrass themselves in front of the opposite sex. How does it work? Simply yell out something alarming, like ‘help me,’ before posing for a quick snap as everyone turns round in confusion.

The resulting image will make you look like the centre of any social situation. It’s all about aura, baby.

Creators like @_jggls_, @brodie.hurdles, @mikemhan623, and @pelinsukucukcesme have all jumped onto the trend, racking up millions of likes and plenty of engagement for their lack of social anxiety. We can only applaud them, frankly.

The comments are equally as funny. ‘This still isn’t patched,’ wrote one user, as many joke that this is the sure-fire way to secure interest from women (or men, obviously). ‘This is the best trend I’ve ever seen,’ said another. ‘-1000 aura to gain infinite aura,’ commented one viewer.

If you’re not up to date on Gen Z terminology, you may be wondering what we mean exactly by ‘auramaxxing.’ Over the past few years, younger social media users have rallied around the idea of ‘maxxing’ any one aspect of their lives.

This means focusing and working on one core part of ourselves to an extreme to be the best we can. It could be our looks, fitness, sleep schedule, or even chinamaxxxing, whereby you adopt daily practices that are common in China. Yes, really.

The idea of ‘maxxing’ originated in quite dark, niche corners of the internet and was first associated with incel forums in the early 2010s.

It began with ‘looksmaxxing,’ where lonely, frustrated young men would try to ‘improve’ their appearance as much as possible in order to – as they believed – move up the social ladder.

The term later found mainstream traction, becoming a staple of Gen Z and Gen Alpha terminology. While it still has misogynistic associations and should be treated with a level of caution, it has largely shed its manosphere origins and exists as its own, unique Gen Alpha and Gen Z word.

There are also a few naysayers who warn that this trend could ‘normalise’ obnoxious or alarming public shouting, though it does seem unlikely to cause any actual wider problems. As long as the kids aren’t eating laundry tablets or necking bottles of vodka like trends of yesteryear, then we’ll likely be fine.
