Is the NFL taking a stance against Trump with its Superbowl halftime show?

The NFL chose known Bad Bunny and Greenday to perform at the Superbowl, two artists who are vehemently outspoken against Trump. Facing immense backlash from right-wing conservatives, the NFL remains unbothered. It looks an awful lot like an active stance against the Trump administration.

On February 8th, Bad Bunny and Greenday will be gracing the stage at the NFL’s 60th Superbowl in Santa Clara, California.

Each year, over 100 million viewers tune in to watch the Superbowl halftime show; one of the most iconic performances in American culture. Each year, the organisation awards this opportunity to an artist who is extremely culturally relevant and likely to break the internet.

And in the year of 2026, after a year of ruthless attacks by the Trump administration on fundamental human rights, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive rights, civil rights, the NFL made an important statement with its choices.

For its annual halftime show, The NFL chose Bad Bunny, a Puerto-Rican top-streaming artist who sings Latin trap and reggaeton songs in Spanish. Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has sold out world tours and is the most globally streamed artist on Spotify. Proud to represent Puerto Rico, he has been vocal about US attacks on immigrants.

In fact, Bad Bunny chose not to have any concerts in mainland US in his most recent world tour out of fear that ICE raids would impact attendees.

‘There was the issue of — like, f—— ICE could be outside (my concert). And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about,’ Bad Bunny told i-D Magazine, when discussing his decision to not perform there.

In the music video released on July 4, 2025 for the opening track, ‘NUEVAYoL’ off of his 2025 album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, Bad Bunny chose to honour US immigrants and call out Donald Trump directly.

He incorporated an AI produced speech with Trump’s voice saying, ‘I made a mistake. I want to apologize to the immigrants in America. I mean the United States. I know America is the whole continent. I want to say that this country is nothing without the immigrants. This country is nothing without Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Cubans.’

Bad Bunny shared this important message at a time where ICE raids were out of control and protests erupted across the nation, including the massive ‘No Kings Day’ protests in June. There is doubt where the artist’s allegiance lies, despite the implications a US ousting could have on his growth.

So, on September 28, 2026, when the NFL announced that Bad Bunny would be headlining the 60th Superbowl, ultra-right conservatives had a very public temper tantrum. In true MAGA fashion, Fox News, Turning Point USA, and Donald Trump had a lot of frantic, emotionally charged words to say about this matter – and most of them didn’t make much sense.

Fox News host Tomi Lahren claimed that Bad Bunny is ‘not an American artist’, Trump called the choice to have him headline ‘ridiculous’ and said ‘he’s never heard of him’. The comments rightly state that that is more an indictment on Trump himself, than the number 1 streamed artist.

Turning Point USA, an ultra-conservative organization founded by the late Charlie Kirk, said it would be hosting its own alternative halftime show, with a large reason being that Bad Bunny won’t be singing in English.

Despite this backlash, the NFL refuses to be bullied into cancelling Bad Bunny’s performance. In fact, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, ‘We’re confident it’s going to be a great show. He [Bad Bunny] understands the platform that he’s on, and I think it’s going to be exciting and a united moment’.

Adding fuel to the fire, they also announced Greenday as the opening act on January 16, 2026. If you’re too young to have seen them in their pomp, the legendary punk rock group composed of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool, have been incredibly outspoken against the Trump administration for decades.

In their hit song, ‘American Idiot’, Billie Joe Armstrong has been recently adding the lyrics ‘I’m  not part of a MAGA agenda’ to the song. Armstrong also called out Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller and the ruthless ICE attacks in Minnesota, including the murder of Renee Good.

During his performance of ‘Holiday’ and ‘Know your Enemy’, he said: ‘This song is anti-fascism. This song is anti-war. We stand up for our brothers and sisters in Minnesota. … Ladies and gentlemen, Stephen Miller now has the floor’.

Unsurprisingly, Trump responded by announcing he would not be attending the game.

And to no one’s surprise, Trump’s fragile ego could not handle two of his haters performing on such a large stage. Trump announced he won’t be attending the game and said: ‘I’m anti-them, I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible.’ These words about ‘sewing hatred’ are coming from a man who has described immigrants as ‘animals’, ‘aliens’, and ‘people with bad genes’.

Unperturbed, and seemingly buoyed by the indignation, the NFL will give a platform to both Bad Bunny and Greenday, and their performances are likely to make a cultural impact that goes beyond the stage.
