Kendrick Lamar wins five Grammys for ‘Not Like Us’

The smash 2024 summer hit ‘Not Like Us’ has taken home five Grammys, making it the most prolific diss track of all time.

If anyone was in doubt as to who won the rap beef last summer, the Grammys just put the final nail in the coffin.

This year was the 67th annual Grammy awards ceremony. Kendrick Lamar won five Grammys for ‘Not Like Us,’ the hit diss track that took aim at Drake seven months ago.

He took home the awards for Best Music Video, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, Song Of The Year, and Record Of The Year. He now has 22 Grammys, 57 nominations, and a Pulitzer Prize.

In just one year (and with one song), Kendrick won the same amount of Grammys as Drake has accumulatively throughout his entire career.

This historic win comes on the tail end of a messy, public and deeply personal feud between both artists. Drake is currently suing UMG for ‘knowingly committing defamation of character by releasing and promoting’ the track and has claimed that he took his son out of school for fears of his safety.

This is the same son that was shockingly revealed to the world in 2018 on another diss track called ‘Story of Adidon’, this one by Pusha T. The fallout from that back and forth felt significant at the time, but in the long-term it didn’t seem to damage Drake’s reputation too much. This time might be different, however.

Kendrick is currently gearing up to play the Super Bowl, where the song is expected to be played in its entirety. It was also performed several times in a row during Kendrick’s pop-up show hosted by Amazon last year.

‘Not Like Us’ as an artistic statement has entered new territory for diss tracks and hip-hop feuds. No other song directly attacking another artist has become such a mainstream hit in quite the same way, especially not as far as awards and industry recognition is concerned.

There have been some heavy hitters, of course, such as Tupac’s ‘Hit ‘Em Up’ or Ice Cube’s ‘No Vaseline,’ but nothing has even remotely touched the widespread popularity of Kendrick’s song. These latest accolades are simply the cherry on top.

It shows that the industry is willing to take down an artist of Drake’s calibre if the money and attention is available. The NFL, Amazon, Spotify and the Grammys have made absolutely no attempt to hide or dismiss the song, instead embracing it as part of the culture.

The runaway success of ‘Not Like Us’ is also a testament to just how far hip-hop has come in terms of mainstream credibility and cultural acceptance.

Female rapper Doechii also took home Best Rap Album – a newcomer that featured on Tyler, The Creator’s latest album CHROMAKOPIA. The net for diversity and artistic merit is clearly widening as the years go on.

Let’s all wait for the Super Bowl performance. It’s undoubtably going to be one to remember.
