death, data + ditching the pursuit of aesthetics

please don’t look through my camera roll

Hey beautiful people!

Hope you’re having a better week than I am (food poisoning lol) and feel ready for a little commentary on news, tech, beauty, and culture.

Today’s edition will be a bit of a shorter one, on account of nausea and a sudden London heatwave. We’ll explore just a few articles, but they’re juicy ones, so grab yourself a fun drink and get comfy.

☠️💭 Digital musings and data

What happens to our online data after death? – thred.

If you’ve never wondered what’s going to happen to all your tech and the data it stores after you die… I can’t relate. Weirdly enough, it’s estimated that within about 40 years, the dead might outnumber the living in online spaces, which is some serious food for thought… what happens to all those profiles? This article explores the digital privacy conundrum our loved ones will be left with when we inevitably cross over to the ‘other side’ – and whether we should care about it at all.

Biden tweets ‘I’m sick’ and Trump is shot – BBC

Apparently the CoCo has infiltrated the respiratory system of President Joe Biden. This has prompted him to tweet ‘I’m sick’, which is ironic given the fact that his physical and mental wellbeing has been called into question constantly during the last few months – accusations he’s vehemently fought against. Honestly, catching the latest COVID variant should be the least of his worries, if he even has the self-awareness to understand what’s going on around him. As his mobile and cognitive capabilities apparently diminish by the day, The Trump Train seems to be picking up momentum, even more so after the internet erupted over a Republican’s attempt to assassinate him. Mom can you pick me up? I’m scared.

Noplace is the hottest social media platform right now – thred.

Feel like you missed the glorious MySpace days? Don’t fret, Noplace is here to save the day. Omitting algorithms and sponsored ads, the platform is encouraging new friendships and authentic social connections by giving users an opportunity to post their thoughts to a real-time feed. After joining, users are connected based on shared interests – the platform even has a ‘top 5’ friends feature just like MySpace did. Noplace is a space for authenticity and sharing fun updates, encouraging you to share what you’re reading, listening to, or watching to help build community. While super popular at the minute, whether it can hold Gen Z’s interest will be another story entirely! We all know what happened to BeReal.

📱🪞 Culture and beauty

Gen Z isn’t afraid to work, they’re afraid to vacation – DCDX

For some reason, older generations have assigned Gen Z the reputation of ‘not wanting to work’ which – if it was true – would be hard to blame them for. I mean, have you seen the state of the economy?  We can’t buy houses, we can barely afford to live, and the job market is basically in the gutter. That said, new surveys on Gen Z’s attitude towards work are showing quite the opposite. Young people are actually afraid to ask for time off. When they do, many are not using this time for travel. Instead, they’re prioritising self-care: sleep, relaxation, and time to reconnect with nature – oh and checking their work e-mail… like, a lot.

We all spend way too much time looking at ourselves – thred.

Tired of constantly looking at yourself? Before mirrors were invented, the only way people could see their own face was by glancing over a pool of still water, if there was one around. Nowadays, we have the ability to see ourselves in 4k anytime we want – and even when we don’t want. This piece explores the dangers and consequences of our modern reality, where screens and photographs and cameras seem to find us at every turn. It also offers advice on how we can overcome the urge to pick apart our never-supposed-to-be-perceived ‘flaws’ when we are constantly forced to see them.

Is content curation going to be our biggest life regret? – Totally Recommend

If you’re on Substack a lot, you may have stumbled upon this article already, but it’s too good not to include. Unfortunately, so many of us have been sucked into the world of ‘aesthetics,’ busying ourselves with documenting the beautiful objects in our life instead of taking moments to raise the camera towards our loved ones. Total Rec explores what we think we’re gaining when we attempt to memorialise our lives through Instagram-worthy photos – and the important memories we are losing out on.

🥒 Recommendations

In light of getting food poisoning (I’ll spare you the details) it’s been almost impossible to drink as much water as I usually do. Not to mention, the thought of eating anything is enough to make my mouth start filling up with saliva – and not in a good way. The only thing I’ve been able to make and eat is this cucumber salad, which is unreal if you want a savoury yet hydrating snack. Seriously, I’ve ate like 4 cucumbers in the last three days. Thank @loganfewds (and me) later!
