AI gets things wrong. So do people. That’s why businesses invented QA. 🤖

The most compelling Star Wars content in 20 years is an AI trap song about Mace Windu falling out of a window.

‘Lil Vader’, a face-tatted Anakin, is all over social, and ‘Mace fell out of a Windu’ has 750,000 Spotify streams in a month. Young people mostly want AI music in the bin: training data, likeness, streaming slop. But inside meme culture, obvious stupidity gets a pass.

It won’t convert anyone. We’re still humming it.

Should the UK tax wealth more heavily, or would a wealth tax create more problems than it solves?

Supporters say it could make the system fairer. Critics say wealth is difficult to value, tax, and keep in the country.

The sudden AI slowdown debate feels a little too convenient. 🤖 Safety concerns may be real, but slowing the race could also benefit those already leading it.

Are AI CEOs genuinely worried about safety, or is there strategy behind the concern?
Harvard Medical School has agreed to a $53 million settlement after donated human remains were stolen and sold by its former morgue manager. Can money ever repair a betrayal this personal?
Netflix looked at the most infamous ethics disaster in psychology and thought: six episodes.

The New Stanford Prison Experiment lands mid-October. Thirty ‘willing’ participants (Netflix’s emphasis) go into a makeshift prison rigged with cameras, split into guards and prisoners, while producers watch whether empathy survives hierarchy and control.

The original, run by Philip Zimbardo at Stanford in 1971, was meant to last two weeks and was pulled after six days. Guards leant into the role fast: sleep deprivation, forced nudity, solitary confinement in a cupboard, sustained psychological torment. It’s now taught as a cautionary tale about power, and heavily criticised for its lack of scientific validity. None of which matters much when you’ve got a recognisable name and a setup built for discord.

From the platform currently marketing serial killers like an Avengers line-up. Consistent, at least.

Thred makes the news easier (and funnier) to understand. Full story in the newsletter, link in bio.
