perfume snobs + streetwear’s end

styling and profiling to start the month

Happy December to you all!

We’re starting this month off strong with a newsletter touching on tech nostalgia, climate change consequences, and the death of streetwear. As usual, there’s more than than that to come.

Let’s dive in!

💿 Tech talk

In simplifying the way we consume media with the aim of improving convenience (streaming literally everything) we’ve lost one very important thing – quality. Music played from CDs, for example, will have a bit rate of 1,411 kilobits per second, while music streamed on Spotify Premium maxes out at 320 kbps. The sad part? Most of us haven’t even realised this loss. What will trigger future generation’s ‘qualitynesia’ or rather, process of forgetting that something from the past was truly better? AI-powered and AI-generated anything, probably. From customer service to the creative sector, machine learning technology is already competing.

Are you being tracked by an AirTag? Here’s how to check – wired

Despite their usefulness for keeping track of useful items, the stalking capability offered by Apple’s AirTags was one of the general public’s primary concerns when the device was first launched in 2021. It didn’t take long for these fears to come to fruition, with reports of AirTags facilitating stalking, theft, and even murder. On that note, it’s probably useful to know how to detect whether one of these devices has been stealthily left on you or one of your belongings. This article has got you covered.

The world’s ‘biggest’ legal case ever is all about climate change – euronews

At the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Netherlands, the courtroom has opened to hear evidence on what could be the largest case in its history. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) have led the charge on this climate justice lawsuit, with the idea first proposed by law students in Fiji five years ago. The two fundamental questions faced by the court’s 15 judges are about a state’s obligations in international law. They include: what is their duty to protect the climate + what are the legal consequences when they cause significant harm through their actions or inactions?

Deforestation is costing farmers millions – the economist

Over the last few decades, maize and soybean production has transformed Brazil’s landscape and economy. But the practice of clear-cutting (removing all trees from a given area) in the Amazon is a double edged sword for farmers. A lack of trees is leading to hotter, drier soil. A study released by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Rainforest Foundation Norway shows that this man-made landscape shift has caused a butterfly effect of lower crop yields that led to economic losses of around $1 billion between 2006 and 2019.

Streetwear has lost its popularity: is that a good thing? – highsnobiety

Streetwear finds its roots in the skateboarding, hip-hop, graffiti, and surf culture that brewed between LA and New York in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Over the past few decades, the fashion industry’s biggest luxury brands – Louis Vuitton, Supreme, Gucci – adopted streetwear silhouettes and designs, driving it to become an almost $200 billion sector of the industry. As widespread demand for streetwear has tapered off, the style has been given space to return back to its roots – and what’s so bad about that?

What’s your problem with my £10 perfume? – refinery29

Britney Spears Fantasy is the fragrance raised me and I’m not ashamed to say it’s still one of my favourite fragrances even though it costs around £13/100ml. I might not wear it anymore, but I get a warm tingly feeling inside when someone passes me in the street with it on! As this article argues, a great smelling perfume doesn’t have to be expensive, and the same applies for those looking to find a signature scent. Perfume ingredients are typically the same across the industry, but the technology of the bottle (spray mechanisms, UV coated bottles, and big brand names) is what brings prices up. I was, however, relieved to see this article describe fragrance dupes as (almost always) a rip off due to manufacturers typically using sub-par amounts of fragrance oils. I knew it!
