is the digital world the modern wild west?

What a week, eh? šŸ‘€

Okayā€¦ Iā€™m aware itā€™s only Tuesday, but this whole daylight savings situation is really making each day feel extra long! Hopefully youā€™re hanging in there ā€“ if not, thereā€™s a yummy recipe at the end of this newsletter that Iā€™m sure will help warm you upā€¦

Weā€™ve got a bunch of fun stuff to get into in this edition, including the internetā€™s beloved Paul Mescal getting cancelled, million dollar AI-generated art, a historic win for debt justice, and much more. So grab a hot drink + letā€™s tuck in, shall we?

šŸŽØ Culture corner

my favourite white boy is not who i thought he wasĀ ā€“ all over the place (via substack)

Apparently male celebrities can get ā€œwomanā€™d,ā€ too. In fact, itā€™s recently happened to one of the internetā€™s favourite heartthrobs: Paul Mescal. In this piece, Luisa and Amanda explore the unrealistic and shaky pedestal certain male celebrities are placed on by female fans ā€“ the so-called ā€˜white boy of the monthā€™ ā€“ and why a culture of perceiving hot, famous men as ā€˜feminist iconsā€™ is a sure path to disappointment, especially in the digital age.

Artwork made by an AI humanoid has sold for $1 millionĀ ā€“ mashable

Last week, artwork created by an AI-powered robot named Ai-Da was auctioned for more than $1 million USD. The painting, named ā€˜AI Godā€™Ā features an abstract portrait of Alan Turing, the British mathematician who helped decode Nazi communications during WWII. Initially expected to sell for $120,000 to $180,000, the painting received 27 bids before being sold to an anonymous buyer. Looks like the days of wondering whether AI art will compete with human creatives are overā€¦

šŸ’¬ Tech talk

Gen Z has started turning to AI tools like ChatGPT for skincare advice, taking advantage of the technologyā€™s immediacy, affordability, and personalisation. Noticing this new trend, brands are racing to improve their algorithmic relevance to ensure their product lines will be featured in AI-generated skincare routines. While helpful, there are risks involved for both brandsĀ andĀ consumers when we seek skincare advice from AI. Any skin diagnosis should always be approved by a human professional, as even the best chatbots are still known to respond incorrectly quite often. Brands, on the other hand, could land in legal trouble if someone has a bad skin reaction after using a product recommended by ChatGPT.

Should smartphones finally be banned in schools?Ā ā€“ the financial times

This question has been swirling for years, but it seems to be gaining some serious attention in recent months. Regular use of social media hasĀ been provenĀ to cause mental health + body image issues in people of all genders, but especially for impressionably young people between the ages of 11-15. With a growing number of UK schools banning smartphones from the classroom, is it time we enforce wider measures to protect young people around the world from constant exposure to the digital world? It is kind of weird that 8 year olds and 50 year olds have the same internet, when you think about it.

šŸ§ Politics + society

Violence broke out on the streets of Amsterdam following a match between the host cityā€™s Ajax and Israelā€™s Maccabi Tel Aviv football teams. Mainstream news outlets swiftly reported that the clashes were rooted in antisemitism, given that they took place between Israelis and pro-Palestinian locals. Videos posted online showed a completely different story, however, with visiting Israelis seen tearing down Palestinian flags, shouting anti-Arab slurs, instigating physical violence, and singing genocidal songs which praised the IDFā€™s brutal attacks on Gaza. Many major broadcasters have since backpedaled on their initial reports after conducting investigations facilitated by content on social media.

$1.1 bn of Somaliaā€™s debt cancelled in ā€˜historicā€™ financial agreementĀ ā€“ the guardian

The United States just cancelled a quarter of Somaliaā€™s outstanding debt (a total of $1.1 billion) making it one of the most historic economic agreements to date! This is a huge win, as debt justice organisations have been calling on Global North countries to cancel the outstanding debt owed to them by Global South countries. Theyā€™ve pointed out that that it would be impossible for debtors to ever pay rich nations back while setting themselves up for prosperous futures. Cancelling paralysing national debt means countries can pursue the road to greater economic stability, sustainable energy solutions, and climate adaptation.

šŸ‘©ā€šŸ³ Recommendation

Who said crunchy, savoury caesar salads were only for summer? Itā€™s warm salad season, meaning you can still enjoy your favourites with a more nourishing twist all autumn/winter long. This recipe by Justine SnacksĀ isĀ soĀ good and easy to make (just chuck it all in the oven), plus youā€™ll be extra prepared for cold and flu season thanks to all the nutrients in the base: roasted brussel sprouts + crispedā€™up chickpeas. Top it with tangy anchovy, lemon, and tahini sauce and youā€™re in for a real treat. Look, donā€™t knock it before you try it!
