Over the weekend, hundreds of young activists in the UK gathered at Parliament Square to highlight our climate change failures. The protest was organised by members of Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future movement as part of a series of similar events across the world.

This protest included speeches from Labour MP @nadiawhittomemp , former Green Party leader @nataliebennettgreen , and former Labour leader @jeremycorbyn .

During the protests, we had the pleasure of meeting some amazing activists who gave us insights into the ways they’re personally tackling the climate crisis. Not to mention the amazing homemade brownies and flapjacks by #xrgrandparentsandelders .

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Somewhere floating in the Pacific is a collection of plastic so large, experts can only estimate its size – an incomprehensible mass of 1.6 million km2.

Opportunity International have spent 50 years developing and delivering financial solutions that enable people living in poverty to increase their incomes, send their children to school, and transform their lives. “Urban Living Room” in Silicon Valley

Sustainable architecture is set to become the new norm. In San Jose, California, a collection of innovative buildings are helping to reimagine a more sustainable form of city living. This project opens up to welcome the community in.

The hollowed out bottom of the building creates an archway filled with retail spaces and entertainment. The upper floors are mostly residential as well as shared workspaces, rooftops, urban parks, and an athletic pavilion.

Social change and environmental organisation Greenpeace turns 50 today.

You’ve most likely heard of it already, as it is one of the household names associated with climate activism and social change. From improving the interiors of commercial fridges to its ‘save the whales’ campaigns, Greenpeace has been an influential force in halting and altering damaging environmental practices.

To mark the occasion, the organisation has launched a virtual wall of activist movements and memories that you can add to yourself. The new feature is intended to ‘put names and faces to all the people campaigning’ for a better future.

3D printed home in just 8 days.

As more regions become uninhabitable due to rising temperatures, crop losses, and disasters, it is predicted to displace between 50-300 million people worldwide. Entire populations will be forced to relocate to more stable regions. This brings with it a lack of affordable housing, sparking a wave of initiatives to tackle the problem.

Bologna-based studio, Mario Cucinella Architects (@mario_cuncinella_architects), partnered with 3D-printing company WASP (@3dwasp) to design a low-carbon home. The prototype called “Tecla” is built up of 350 layers of coiled clay, sourced from a nearby river that acts as a thermal insulation. It takes only 200 hours to construct using an average of 6 kilowatts-hours of energy.

Would you mind living in a space like this? I know I certainly wouldn’t. With house prices skyrocketing, maybe this is the future of housing.

Origins: Two renowned conservationists who wish to spark global conversations about our planet.

Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen, two renowned conservationists, debut their exhibition in Chicago about our oceans. These photographs are a reminder of the fragility of our icy ecosystems - from ice waterfalls to drifting icebergs and fleeting penguins, the Arctic is slowly disappearing. These photographs document the extreme changes in Arctic temperatures over the last decade.

The UK becomes the latest region to completely ban single-use plastics.

Joining a growing list of countries including India, Canada, and New Zealand, the production and use of throwaway plastics like cutlery, cups, balloons, and shopping bags will be prohibited in the near future.

Unfortunately, it has to be said the environmental bill will likely take until 2023 to officially come into action.

“We have made progress to turn the tide on plastic, banning the supply of plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds, while our carrier bag charge has cut sales by 95% in the main supermarkets,” Environment Secretary George Eustice explains. “These plans will help us stamp out the unnecessary use of plastics that wreak havoc with our natural environment.”

YVMIN has collaborated with model Xiao Yang on a collection of statement prosthesis accessories in the hope that people with disabilities will feel better included in fashion.

Regardless of strides taken in recent years to improve upon the absence of disability representation in fashion – namely major brands recognising their responsibility to support the community by featuring them in campaigns and developing adaptive clothing lines – industry-wide ableism prevails.

At fault of propagating discrimination in favour of the able-bodied, retailers and designers alike continue to churn out garments that don’t cater to those suffering from chronic conditions or impairments.

When they do, the pieces are often inclined to functionality, leaving the style component overlooked.

It’s this, alongside a desire to challenge stereotypes, that model Xiao Yang (who’s been wearing a prosthetic leg for twenty years) is seeking to change with her YVMIN collaboration.
