Ed Sheeran street concert shut down by police in India

In widely-shared footage online, a police officer can be seen unplugging Ed Sheeran’s microphone at a street performance in India.

Ed Sheeran had his street performance in India cut short over the weekend, despite reportedly asking permission before starting. A police offer unplugged his microphone and ushered him away, leaving onlookers disappointed.

The incident occurred before Ed was scheduled to play in the city of Bengaluru later that evening. He had seemingly decided to put on a show in the street beforehand for local residents.

In a video that has since done the rounds on social media, a police offer can be seen approaching as Ed is singing his hit song ‘Shape Of You.’ After the music is cut short, Ed claims that he had permission to perform before walking away.

However, police have since said that event organisers had actually been refused permission for the street performance. It was scheduled to take place on Church Street, one of the busiest areas in Bengaluru, which is one of India’s largest cities.

Ed has since doubled down on Instagram, insisting that they did in fact have permission to play.

‘We had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out beforehand. It wasn’t just us randomly turning up,’ he said. ‘All good though.’

Having been one of the most popular artists in the world for well over a decade, Ed has garnered a reputation for performing in odd places. In 2015, he went viral for performing for $2 in a peep show venue, for example.

Ed is currently on a 15-day tour across India. Demand for live music is increasing in the region and Western artists are catering to this new market as a result.

Dua Lipa and Coldplay have both recently wrapped up tours and KSI also travelled to India with Mr Beast and Logan Paul several months ago to perform live.

The money is clearly there and we’ll likely see more well-known faces make the leap across in the coming years.

With how expensive tickets are becoming in the US and the UK, it might even be cheaper to fly overseas to see your favourites before long. Just don’t let them play in the street…
