The Nobel Prize winners were announced between October 7th – 14th, but who are they and why did they win?

From 1901 to the present day, we have been presented annually with the Nobel Prize winners in medicine, physics, chemistry, economics, literature, and peace.

Who are this year’s winners?

NOBEL PRIZE DAY - December 10, 2024 - National Today

Nobel Peace Prize 2024 – Nihon Hidankyo

“For its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.”

Nihon Hidankyo is an organization founded in 1956 by survivors of the atomic bombs dropped in 1945 on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Through their testimonies, videos showing the physical afflictions they suffered, manifestations, and presentations at international assemblies, they seek to prevent a nuclear war, and the elimination of atomic weapons.

They are also recognized for constantly providing and seeking to improve support for the victims of these attacks so that they can live in dignity.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2024 – David Baker, Demis Hassabis, and John Jumper

“For computational protein design”

This group solved one of the biggest problems of modern science. David managed to create new proteins and Demis & John managed to program an AI model to predict the 3D shape of various proteins. These contributions have immense potential for the creation of cures and medicines for various diseases.

Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024 – Victor Ambros & Gary Ruvkun

“For the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation”

Awarded for their discovery of microRNA molecules, which control the regulation of genes in cells. Their research began in the 1990s.

Such an important discovery! I am also losing my voice a little during this video haha! I will be making follow up videos about microRNA and it’s discovery. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2024 – Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson & James Robinson

“For studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity”

In their book “Why Nations Fail” explored the factors that determine whether a nation can be prosperous or not, with a central thesis that a country’s prosperity lies in the state of its political and economic institutions and whether these are inclusive or extractive.

@econchrisclarke

The Nobel goes to Acemoglu, Johnson, & Robinson for their work on the effects of institutions on long-run economic prosperity. It’s not an easy topic to study, empirics have advanced since. We’ve also got a few memes out of it over the years.
