Senior Remote Writer Brighton, UK

I’m Flo, (She/Her) a Senior Remote Writer at Thred. I recently completed a Masters in Visual Anthropology, and seek to interrogate the ways digital spaces can amplify marginalised voices in the arts and cultural sectors. Follow me on LinkedIn or ping me some feedback via email.

Hi, I’m Flo. I recently completed my Masters in visual, material, and museum anthropology, where I learnt about the many economies and communities that are woven together through consumption. I’ve always been creative at heart, and love painting in my spare time.

You can also find me deep in a book, or listening to the latest self-help podcast. As a fashion junkie with a penchant for inconveniently tiny bags, I am drawn to the ways social media amplifies marginalised voices within the industry.

I always enjoy clueing up on the latest ways our clothing shapes who we are.

My interests led me to team Thred, where I enjoy writing about arts, fashion, and literature from social change perspectives.

Why has UK shoplifting reached a record high?

Why has UK shoplifting reached a record high?

At a time when many Brits can’t afford to support themselves or their families, is it any surprise that in-store theft is on the rise?  The news cycle seems to be preoccupied with updates regarding grocery prices and cost of living surges. Only yesterday I looked at my phone to find a notification that my water bill was increasing from April. Sigh. For the average Brit, shopping has become a daunting...

The artist vs person debate at the heart of the Emilia Perez scandal

The artist vs person debate at the heart of the Emilia Perez scandal

Backlash against lead Karla Sofia Gascón points to the morality minefield of consuming an artist's actions alongside their work. Karla Sofia Gascón is the first trans woman to be nominated for Best Lead Actress at the Oscars for her role in Netflix underdog Emilia Perez. I use the term underdog because the film itself, which focuses on the story of a cartel kingpin transitioning to live as a woman, features an...

Gen Z has a love affair with digital nomadism

Gen Z has a love affair with digital nomadism

Welcome to the latest edition of The Gen Zer. This week’s newsletter delves into Gen Z's relatively newfound obsession with digital nomadism and quitting traditional corporate pathways. I’d be lying if I said I don’t fantasise about quitting my corporate job at least once a day. It’s February. It’s cold. It’s wet. It’s dark. None of these details amount to a pleasant morning commute.  And as my face presses into the...

Opinion – ‘What I Eat in a Day’ videos are entirely unappetizing

The trend of sharing our daily meals invites harmful diet tropes, unhealthy comparisons, and a general disillusionment with food. So why can’t we escape ‘What I Eat in a Day’ videos? There’s a peculiar flavour to modern voyeurism, and it comes in the form of meal vlogging. Otherwise known as ‘What I Eat in a Day’ videos, food content has emerged as social media’s answer to an appointment with the nutritionist,...

Climate change could halve global GDP

Climate change could halve global GDP

A new report by the IFoA warns the global economy could face 50% loss in gross domestic product due to the catastrophic impacts of climate change.  The numbers pertaining to the climate crisis continue to paint a grave picture. And a new report from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) is no different. The organisation has posed a stark warning: if the catastrophic effects of global warming continue...

What Reddit vs X says about internet groupthink

What Reddit vs X says about internet groupthink

Multiple subreddits are banning X links in protest of Elon Musk’s salute at the presidential inauguration. The implosion of ideological groupthink online highlights the fascinating potential of digital community.  Elon Musk was one of a number of tech-giants who took center stage at Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration. The X owner and Tesla founder has become an unlikely political sidekick (or partner in crime, if you prefer) since the latter...

The sauna is replacing the club

The sauna is replacing the club

Gen-Z are turning to communal saunas in place of nights out. But what’s the appeal of these steamy hang-outs?  Take a look at London’s social scene, and you’ll quickly realise that the nightclub is under threat. Well, the nightclub’s reign as an epicenter of youthful connection and sweaty camaraderie, anyway. It seems that in the clerb, we’re not all fam. Because everyone has left the club and headed for the sauna. Young...

Why do we love mocking scam victims online?

Why do we love mocking scam victims online?

You can try and deny it, but we love laughing in the face of innocent scam victims. The more elaborate the scam, the louder the taunts. But at a time when anti-bullying agendas are everywhere, why are we so quick to mock the internet's most vulnerable?  A very shoddy photoshop job went viral last week. The series of images featured Brad Pitt in various states of ill health; undergoing surgery,...

Drag Queens face rising criticism and abuse

Drag Queens face rising criticism and abuse

Following the death of UK drag star The Vivienne, members of the community warn of growing homophobia and transphobia levels across the country.  When The Vivienne was crowned winner of the inaugural season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK, a star was born.  The Vivienne, whose real name is James Lee Williams, was a Welsh performer who reflected the best of British drag, with a sharp wit and iconic sense...
