Fancy some unhinged Harry Potter news? Of course you do!
A new multimillion-pound power cable between the UK and Ireland has been relocated following complaints from Harry Potter fans who were concerned it would destroy Dobby’s ‘grave.’
Yes, the fictional Dobby, the house elf who was granted freedom and later fought against Voldemort alongside Harry.
In the franchise’s final installment, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,’ Dobby is killed and ‘laid to rest’ on Freshwater West beach in Pembrokeshire. The area is featured prominently in the film adaptation and is a pivotal moment in the series.
It is so important, in fact, that fans have built a real shrine at the same location, often leaving stones that read ‘Here Lies Dobby’ upon their visits.
As The Guardian notes, the National Trust has repeatedly asked people not to do this, as the land is technically an ‘ecologically sensitive site.’
The Greenlink interconnector cable will link the National Grid to Ireland, and was originally supposed to pass through Dobby’s ‘grave.’ After this information became public during a BBC interview, project manager Simon Ludlam received ‘hundreds of calls’ from distressed Harry Potter fans.
Ludlam was confused as he had not seen the films nor read the books, but did eventually enlist planners to find a new route that avoided the grave. It will now pass near several Bronze Age remains, which include urns associated with human burial.
Is that any better? We’re not quite sure. We’ll let you decide.
