Rockstar has announced that GTA VI will now be released in November 2026, pushing it back by another six months and over a year later than its original, intended launch date. Itโs the latest title thatโs suffered heavy setbacks.ย
GTA VI is being delayed until November 2026, Rockstar has announced.
The sixth entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is the most anticipated video game of all time and was originally slated for a 2025 release before being pushed back to May 2026.
It is now being moved by another six months, with industry commentators estimating it might be costing publisher Take Two $60 million USD in extra development time.

Insiders believe that the game is content complete, but needs the additional months to polish and iron out bugs.
This is likely a huge endeavour given GTA VIโs massive scope; as weโve seen with other ambitious projects like Cyberpunk 2077, rushing the game out before itโs fully realised could backfire and damage the franchiseโs brand value.ย
Fans have largely reacted with disappointment. Most had predicted that another delay was inevitable, as weโve only seen two trailers so far and no actual gameplay reveal aside from a few leaks.ย
AAA game developers have a habit of constantly changing their deadlines, with many, many companies routinely publishing apology statements on Twitter, so much so that itโs become a meme.ย
Ambitious titles are a logistical nightmare to put together and can launch with tons of problems. Look at Halo: Infinite, Battlefield 2042, Fallout 76, Redfall, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, or even the botched remaster of the original Grand Theft Auto trilogy as examples of releases gone wrong.ย

Rockstar has also been accused of โunion bustingโ in the last few weeks after sacking 31 employees in the UK. Take Two was approached by the BBC, who claims the move was made in response to staff โsharing confidential informationโ regarding GTA VI with the public.
The Independent Workersโ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) disputes this, saying that Rockstarย deliberately removed employees that were involved with unions in order to save their own skin.
So, what does all this mean for the consumer?ย
The most obvious, immediate concern will be that GTA VI wonโt be available for another year at the very least. Fans have noted that the excessive wait might actually cause hype to die down, as people simply lose interest or faith that anything playable will ever materialise.
Bethesdaโs Elder Scrolls VI is arguably a victim of this phenomenon.ย
Its predecessor, Skyrim, came out fourteen years ago in 2011. CEO Todd Howard recently said the new game is โstill a long way offโ despite officially teasing it seven years ago. So much time has accumulated that plenty of gamers have simply moved on and given up.ย
