What leaks are saying about Resident Evil 8

Resident Evil 8 leaks are circulating on social media this month, and sources claim the next chapter is coming in the form of a direct Biohazard sequel. Yup, that means first person.

Beyond the remake of Resident Evil 3, Capcom are keeping their cards close to their chest when it comes to the immediate future of their most beloved franchise. But just like the viruses in RES, online leaks and spoilers regarding their next mainline release are spreading rapidly. And too many plot and gameplay details are being cited by multiple sources for them to be purely coincidental.

Here’s what we’ve gleaned so far. Get pinchin’ that salt.

Resident Evil purists aren’t too happy with what they’ve heard thus far. But if, like me, you were a massive fan of the change of direction with Biohazard, you’ll be chuffed with the leaks.

According to YouTube channel Residence of Evil and EurogamerResident Evil 8 – If it’s even called that – will take place directly after the harrowing events of Biohazard. Yes, that means first person is back along with the series’ most grounded protagonist in Ethan Winters. And despite our best efforts in Biohazard, so is Evaline apparently. To the uninitiated, that’s the creepiest little girl since FEAR’s Alma Wade in the mid noughties.

If the leaks are to be believed, it looks as though Capcom are trying to delineate between two separate stories and branches of development: the third person remakes with the shiny new RE Engine, and an experimental future less about action, and more about pure survival horror (and VR).

Having sold more than 7 million copies since its 2017 release, it’s safe to say there’s more commercial value to be had from the Biohazard arch. Capcom’s refusal to comment on the leaks certainly suggests there’s something in them too.

Without further ado, let’s get stuck into the plot details though. Residence of Evil claim the Biohazard sequel will mark the return of fan favourite Chris Redfield to the current timeline. In terms of location this time around, the story is said to unfold within a snowy and mountainous village, and then eventually a gothic castle.

And the series’ bestiary is set to be bolstered with some heinous sounding enemies too. The return of the series’ iconic zombies will appease those who couldn’t get on board with the ‘moulded’ enemies throughout Biohazard. This could also potentially mean the T virus phase has now permeated Ethan’s narrative.

Wolf-like creatures reportedly stalk the snowy landscape (hopefully we’re talking more Van Helsing and less Twilight).  And Just like Titan in the RES 2 remake, the leak claims players will be constantly pursued by an immortal enemy at regular intervals, this time in the form of a ‘shadowy female entity’. Likely a manifestation of Eveline, if you ask me.

Personally, I’m over the moon with reports that Capcom want to progress Ethan’s story. While the classic arcade-style titles from the franchise are equally fun and unnerving, they didn’t leave a lasting impression on me anything like Biohazard did. The first-person shakeup allowed Capcom to really home in on creating an unflinching sense of dread and to focus on roleplay style elements that just wouldn’t have found a home in their typical style.

The unique blend of solid gunplay, point and click horror, and stealth created the first truly memorable gaming experience I wish I could forget. And Capcom could be building something even more terrifying right now.
