Three Gen Z musicians you need to listen to

From bedroom pop to indie rock, Gen Z musicians are pushing the boundaries of modern music and creating exciting, fresh sounds that are worth checking out.

After reading that the average age of chart musicians is younger than its been in over 19 years, it got me thinking – who are the best musicians of Gen Z? As us plucky youngsters grew up accustomed to the world of streaming and can’t remember the last time we bought a CD, our tastes and styles have reflected the more eclectic landscape of music consumption.

Jumping between hip hop and edgy pop has never been so easy. These wide-ranging tastes are reflected in many of the top artists of today – pop takes its fair share of influence from trap, the emo wave now extends beyond just punk rock, and artists like Billie Eilish are offering a darker flavour to the charts.

So, with all that in mind, here’s a quick pick of some Gen Z musicians blowing up right now who blend a variety of influences to create something truly unique – and you’d be a close-minded fool to skip over them.

Rex Orange County

Picking Rex to kick this list off is particularly timely.

He’s been keeping a low profile since his last album and prolific features on Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Flower Boy’ in 2017, but has literally just dropped a new single titled ‘10/10’. The track addresses a year of emotional ups and downs as his career has blossomed, with a quirky music video that features yellow spider-man costumes, excessively long headphone wires, and a ghost costume.

If you’re into acoustic jams and heartfelt singer-song writing, then look no further than Rex, whose back catalogue includes umpteenth amounts of break-up bangers and emotional pop tunes. My personal favourite is ‘Sunflower’, a saxophone-laced banger about apathy that has a gorgeous video.

He’s gained significant traction in the last year and he’s also teased that a third album could be on the way. There’s never been a better time to get into Rex and, if you dig his sound, there are a wealth of other artists who follow similar stylistic tendencies.

Snail Mail

Despite what you might see from music publications written for older audiences, guitar music is not dead. They may not be hitting the top of the charts like their trap and pop contemporaries, but indie bands are making significant waves in the alternative scene – Snail Mail is one such act.

Twenty year-old Lindsey Jordan has been causing a buzz for a while thanks to her fuzzy, guttural rock tracks that poignantly articulate teenage heartbreak. Snail Mail is her own indie solo project and she dropped her first album Lush last year. Check out this highlight, ‘Heat Wave’, which has a retro 80s vibe and a red aesthetic that’s in line with the album artwork.

You can also find plenty of other indie rock artists that are bringing a modern twist to the 90s style. If you find yourself bumping to Snail Mail, make sure to have a look about the genre for other albums you might enjoy – there are plenty to find.

Juice WRLD

By far the most commercially successful artist of these three picks, Juice WRLD is one of several high-profile rappers bringing the emo sound of noughties pop punk to modern day trap. Drawing significant influence from Post Malone, he’s smashed through the charts with his hit ‘Lucid Dreams’ and recently featured on the Spiderman: Into The Spider Verse soundtrack.

His album ‘Death Race For Love’ features gloomy beats and emotive verses that discuss exes, drinking too much, and struggling with self-love. Juice WRLD (real name Jarad A. Higgins) is only twenty years old, but has already reached excessive heights in the industry. Listen to ‘Lucid Dreams’ below, though it’s likely you’ve already heard it at least once before.

He’s not the only one tapping into a new angle on trap – others are following suit that take on similar beats and subject matters. Post Malone is probably the biggest example, but there’s a whole school of acts who hit the same mark.
