Disney+ launches with delays and glitches

The US finally has its hands on Disney’s premium new subscription service, but you might have some trouble actually logging on and streaming.

Disney has been hyping up its new streaming platform Disney+ for quite some time now.

We’ve been bombarded with various trailers for content that’ll feature on the service over the last few months, including the gritty new spaghetti-western style Star Wars series The Mandalorian and a bunch of rereleased classics from the Disney archives.

Other programmes based on Disney properties such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Home Alone, and Night at the Museum, amongst others, are also geared to launch sometime within the next year. The US officially got its hands on the platform last Tuesday, though things haven’t been as smooth as Disney probably hoped.

You may experience some difficulties getting everything running if you sign up right now. According to multiple, vocal users on Twitter, the website often crashes when entering your details, the smartphone app can become unresponsive, and shows themselves may even lag when you’re trying to watch – not the most ideal situation.

Disney released a statement almost instantly, explaining that the bugs were being caused by ‘consumer demand [that] exceeded our high expectations’. Over 7,500 reports of errors flooded in an hour or so after the service went live. 35 percent of these were related to log-in issues and 64 percent were for issues playing content back. I’m not sure what that other 1 percent complained about – maybe too many superhero films?

Expect things to smooth out in the coming days but, if you do feel like braving it right now and you live in the US, Australia, or the Netherlands, you can sign up for $6.99 a month. Disney+ won’t be available in the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, or Ireland until 31st March 2020, which means I’ll have to wait a while if I want to actually get in on this Mandalorian buzz.

Is Disney+ worth the entry price?

The abundance of different streaming platforms gatekeeping various programmes and shows behind paywalls is becoming an issue. Despite the seemingly never-ending announcements of new services, Disney has the upper hand against most in that it owns so damn much of pop culture’s most iconic franchises.

Whether that’s convenient or mildly dystopian is up for debate, but it does mean that you’re getting a lot for your cash. Keep in mind that it is cheaper than the most obvious competitor, Netflix, though it’s obviously more limited. Any fan of Star Wars, Marvel films, or just 20th Century Fox films in general, will have a lot to dig into here – it all depends on whether you’re willing to add another subscription on top of everything else.

Disney+ strikes me as a service best enjoyed in small bursts. If you want access to a bunch of family Christmas films over the festive season, for example, it’s far better for your wallet to buy a subscription than piles of DVDs or one off pay-per-views. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see a surge of new subscribers in December that tail off in the new year.

Either way, for now the platform sounds a tiny bit like a hot mess. It may be best to wait a few weeks for things to straighten out before giving it a go.
