The battle royale mania is set to recommence with the news that EA and Respawn Entertainment are launching a global E-sports competition with more than $3 million at stake.
Today, Respawn Entertainment have announced their plans to create a global E-sports tournament for their flagship titleย Apex Legends, and everyone with a copy of the game will have a shot at making the circuit and winning part of the lucrative prize pool of $3 million.
The new competition, dubbed the Apex Legends Global Series, will consist of 12 live events housed at different locations around the globe; all set up by EA, or the tournamentโs production partners PGL and GLL. I know It sounds like the sort of boujee event usually exclusive to the rosterโs finest, but non-pro players can make the grade too. In-fact, entry to the initial stages can be gained from the comfort of your bed or your computer chairโฆ the place you do your finest work.
The Apex Legends Global Series is an ecosystem open to residents of over 60 countries worldwide, though there are minimum PC system requirements (currently unspecified) which will instantly discount a large pool of players. Maybe a last-minute alteration to the Christmas list will suffice.
Similar toย FIFA Ultimate Teamย andย Fortniteย competitions, the initial stages will be open to the millions ofย Apexย PC players online, with the best performers advancing to regional and eventually premier events. The first qualifiers commence on January 25th next year, meaning thereโs still time to hone your craft and sharpen those reflexes ifย Apexย has fallen down your pecking order in recent times.
Itโs worth noting now that in this specific game mode performances will be measured through a unique set of parameters known as the โMatch Pointโ system. This will require teams or solo players to reach a certain point threshold with XP from both kills and match placement. Sneaking around the edge of the zone while other players off each other simply will not suffice, if you want to compete with the elite.
After the initial qualifiers, players will head through to live matches at regional Challenger Events and global Premier Events to earn Global Series points โ which go toward competing at four Series Majors. It all sounds a little complicated I know, but from what we can glean; the first three Series Majors will feature 100 three-player squads, and the fourth (aka the final), will see 60 teams fight it out for the Global Series Championship and $1 million prizes.
