Nadia Mohamed secured her place in history by becoming the first Somali-American woman to be elected as the mayor of St. Louis Park city in Minnesota. At the young age of 27, Mohamed has not only defied conventional expectation but has also paved the way for a generation of diverse, young leaders.
Nadia Mohamed’s journey to the mayor’s office is one marked by resilience, determination, and a commitment to community service.
Mohamed, who took oath of office this month following a competitive November election – garnering 58% of the total votes – has become the first Somali immigrant and the youngest person ever elected to lead a city in the United States.
Her Somali heritage, combined with her American upbringing, has given her a unique perspective that she now brings to the forefront of city leadership in St. Louis Park.
Nadia Mohamed’s academic journey laid the foundation for her future in politics. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in human resources management from Metropolitan State University, and is currently completing her master’s in educational leadership at St.Thomas University.
Before diving into the political arena, Mohamed devoted herself to various community projects aimed at addressing social issues and fostering unity. Her work resulted in her being named a co-recipient of the St. Louis Park Human Rights Award in 2019 and served to show what could be achieved through civic activity.
