Adidas’ mission to clean the world’s oceans

Adidas and Parley are recommencing 2018’s global initiative, Run for the Oceans, to continue educating young people and their families (living in coastal areas) on the importance of combatting marine plastic pollution.

If you hadn’t heard, it’s World Oceans Day on June 8th; a day which unites people the world over to celebrate and honour that which connects us (quite literally).

The landmark day has become more significant now than ever, with an estimated 12.7 million tonnes of plastic projected to end up in our oceans by the end of the 2019, ranging from Cornish beaches to uninhabited Pacific Islands and all four corners of the globe… the globe is flat, right?

Thankfully, several stewardly brands are committed to both cleaning up and re-purposing our oceans’ current waste for practical and sustainable means. And sport meccas adidas are among the most ardent advocates for this modern initiative.

In 2018, adidas and Parley started a global project together named Run for the Oceans, which brought together close to a million runners from across the world raising $1 million USD. The funds were used to inspire and educate over 100,000 youths living in coastal areas on the importance of combatting marine plastic pollution.

Despite the resounding success of last year’s excursion, the partners are refusing to rest of their laurels and have targeted a goal of $1.5 million this year, which will also assist in the launch of the Parley Ocean youth activist program – which aims to teach through both lectures and experiences in and on the water; including, swimming, snorkelling, surfing etc.

That’s right, adidas are good for a whole lot more than just providing Hypebeast with a continuous stream of Sneaker Drops.

And while we’re on the subject, adidas have also been producing sneakers part-constructed from recycled ocean plastics since 2016, asserting that they aim to be using recycled polyester (which makes up around 50% of all their products) exclusively by 2024.

Hopefully this mega-brand’s foray into the world of sustainability can inspire others to join the cause. In the meantime, download the app here ahead of June 8th. For every kilometre tracked on the day, you’ll contribute a dollar towards the mission.

We’ll be sure to contribute as much as possible before keeling over in the streets of London somewhere.
