The Last of Us Part II finally gets release date

PlayStation’s State of Play conference was largely meh, but The Last of Us Part II trailer fully delivered on the requisite heartbreak, violence, horror, and ofc the release date we were all hoping for.

Last night Sony and Naughty Dog finally revealed that the sequel to PlayStation’s seminal exclusive is arriving on February 21st next year, and the follow up trailer has the stimulated the salivary glands of gamers the world over.

It’s been an antsy six years since we said tearful ta tas to Joel, Ellie and Neil Druckmann’s post-apocalyptic America, and we’re all champing at the bit to again get stuck into the brutality, the horrors, and the inevitable emotional traumas Naughty Dog have waiting for us.

Pre-orders & special editions

If, like myself, you plan on stunting the arduous wait by pre-ordering the game asap and then erasing it from your memory, we have you covered with pe-order and special editions here:

The Standard Edition will be available at your go-to gaming stores after the February 21st but as you can imagine they’ll likely sell out as fast as they’re put up, this is basically a safety measure — £44.99.

The Special Edition (£69.99) will include a ‘steel book’ case, a 48-page mini book, and a dynamic PS4 theme.

If you want to go the whole hog/have more money than sense, The Collector’s Edition (£180) includes everything in the previous packages with an added Ellie figure, a recreation of Ellie’s rucksack, a vinyl with the soundtrack, and a wearable replica of Ellie’s bracelet.

All pre-orders come with in-game bonuses including an ammo capacity upgrade and crafting training manual, as well as a PSN avatar featuring Ellie’s tattoo.

The trailer

The reveal trailer last year provided little context for Ellie’s murderous rampage throughout E3’s lengthy gameplay footage, but last night gave us all some needed clarity on the story.

Five years after the events of The Last of Us a 19-year-old Ellie appears to have found some normality and peace in her life with girlfriend Dina.

As we already know Joel sacrificed the opportunity to trade Ellie for a potential antidote to the virus ravaging mankind, and the world has had to adapt to rediscover some form of normality – functioning villages and holdfasts away from major cities – while the world around them continues to fall at the hands of bandits and monsters.

It looks as though this new story will kickstart with a scarring moment similar to the first… poor Sarah, poor Joel. We’ve gleaned that something clearly happens to Dina early on, and the grief appears to re-ignite a fire inside Ellie that’s grown from a modest flicker into a raging blaze over time.

Heading back into the treacherous streets of NYC Ellie goes on a brutal crusade to ‘make them pay’, we don’t know who they are yet, but we trust El’s judgement and we’re fully down. A ruffled Joel also makes a goose bump inducing appearance at the end to help with the final mission.

Guessing he finally told her the truth about the Fireflies then. Why else would they part ways in the first place?

In conclusion this just looks incredible. I’ve already pre-ordered the game and we’ve yet to even see the multiplayer they’ve been harping on about. Naughty Dog claim they’ve got more to show us this week too, so keep it locked here for any further announcements.
