Inspired by The Beatles, Stella McCartney’s vibrant new collection comes with a powerful message to release our inner activist.
Unity is the driving force behind the riotous, lyric-led pieces of Stella McCartney’s brand-new clothing range that embodies the psychedelic feel of Yellow Submarine, an animated film about The Beatles that was created in 1968. The world-famous band are renowned for the way they revolutionised music, and for their timeless message of inclusivity. Both of these elements come alive in McCartney’s recent work.
‘I recently went to a screening with family and friends for the digital relaunch of [the film],’ says McCartney. ‘I hadn’t seen it since I was young, and honestly it blew my mind. It affected me in a way I just wasn’t expecting. Especially this idea of connecting people and bringing people together – politically this message has never been more relevant.’
A unique fusion of fashion, colour and music, the collection is now available online and in stores. It includes items for men, women, and children that feature the British band’s classic iconography as well as eccentric graphics from the film.
Personally, I think it’s fab, especially the maxi dress embroidered with prints from the Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds scene or the All You Need Is Love sweater (which goes with pretty much anything).
Debuted by Billie Eilish during her first-ever Glastonbury performance this year, the bold collection is aimed towards Gen Z, conveying themes of peace, love, and togetherness that are especially important today.
‘It’s shockingly modern to me that these four young guys from Liverpool were championing themes of unity and solidarity. It really felt like the time to ‘come together’’, says the designer.
Channeling McCartney’s interest in the psychological connection between how you feel and what you wear, I think it’s safe to say that the authentic clothing and campaign alongside it is a true embodiment of expression.
