The libraries of today are characterised by electronic checkout systems, chunky outdated PCs, and labyrinths of bland white rooms filled with pinewood shelves and plastic seats.
Thankfully, there are a few libraries out there thatโre as grandiose as the volumes they hold, reminding us that they were intrinsically created to be temples of knowledge, not somewhere for sixth formers to play Doodlejump at lunchtime.
Here are the four of the coolest libraries from around the world today:
1. Trinity College Library, Dublin, Ireland
Trinity Collegeโs Old Library is largely famous for housing the โBook of Kells,โ the ninth-century gospel manuscript considered to be one of Irelandโs national treasures, but thereโs much more to this library than one ancient (albeit stunning and rare) book.
Located upstairs from the exhibition room is a superb panorama of tall oak bookcases (containing over 200,000 books) stretching under a stunning arched ceiling.
This beautiful hall is open to the public for a fee, so to any Trinity College students out there, hit us up on socials.
2.ย The Boston Athenaeum, Boston, US
Constructed in 1807, the โBoston Athenaeumโ is among the oldest and most distinguished independent libraries (and cultural institutions) in the United States.
If you were getting art gallery vibes from this pristine and elegant hall, pat yourself on the back. As well as being one of the largest libraries in the US, housing over half-a-million volumes, this library also hosts art exhibitions, lectures, and even concerts.
If this serene space wasnโt striking enough already, it happens to overlook the imposing Granary Burial ground; established in 1660.
