Blizzard sues for Warcraft ‘rip-off’ mobile game

Chinese developer Sina Games is under fire for their game that appears to directly copy World Of Warcraft.

Blizzard Entertainment has filed a lawsuit against Sina Games, the Chinese developer who run the free-to-play title Glorious Saga on the App Store. The company is being hit with damages from Blizzard who claim the mobile game ‘almost entirely copied’ from its popular Warcraft games.

A court order has been filed to stop the infringement, and Blizzard are seeking $150,000 per stolen work – presumably this means each asset or product that has an obvious likeness to the Warcraft franchise will count. It’s easy to see how this lawsuit came about. One look at game screenshots and assets and it’s obvious that Sina Games took more than their fair share of inspiration from Blizzard.

Knockoffs are nothing new, particularly when it comes to mobile gaming. One search for Minecraft, for example, will display numerous copies and bootleg versions of the original – most of which probably aren’t legal. It flags up questions about Apple and Google’s filtering system and quality control.

You’ve probably seen some questionable content floating about the store and it begs the question; why is this stuff allowed to get through? Both platforms have measures in place, but they clearly aren’t able to keep copyright issues at bay all of the time, which causes headaches for developers and lawyers.

For now, we’ll have to see how Blizzard’s current court action goes, though we’ll hazard a guess that they’ll probably do quite well. It’s clear that many of their properties were stolen. Let’s just hope that less copycats and knock off clones get through to the public domain in the future.
