The Kardashians jump on the resale shopping bandwagon

In the wake of the Kardashainโ€™s recent venture into the resale business, we take a look at what this venture means for the future of second-hand shopping.

If you read our recent article aboutย fast fashionโ€™s long overdue demise, then youโ€™ll know that resale shopping is all the rage nowadays.

Forever 21 has officially filed for bankruptcy. A โ€˜Fashion Pactโ€™ was signed at this yearโ€™s G7 summit. And brands are starting to change their methods of production in an effort to reduce the industryโ€™s impact on our planet.

These are all just a few of the changes being made by major companies as consumers come to terms with the fact that theyโ€™re better off investing in sustainable fashion and timeless pieces thatโ€™ll hold up for years. And itโ€™s for this reason that wearing other peopleโ€™s clothes is now more fashionable than ever before.

For those who still think it isnโ€™t โ€˜coolโ€™, bear in mind that buying second-hand items has increased by 46% in the last two years, and one in three Gen Zers much prefer reusing and recycling to โ€˜mall cultureโ€™ and disposable fashion.

The resale clothing market is growing at a rate thatโ€™sย twenty-one times fasterย than the overall fashion industry and honestly, whyย wouldnโ€™tย the Kardashians want to get on board?

Kardashian Kloset, which launches today, will let shoppers purchase items right from their very own collections. If you follow any of the sisters on social media, you will โ€“ like me โ€“ have fawned over the copious pairs of shoes, stunning gowns and designer handbags that line the shelves of their enormous wardrobes.

While there is no indication as to how deep into their infamous closets theyโ€™ll actually be going, no more admiring from behind our screens, weโ€™ll actually be able to get our hands on some of the things theyโ€™ve worn.

The Kardashian Kloset insta page doesnโ€™t really give us a lot more info, but we do get a sneak peek of whatโ€™s going to be on sale, including Krisโ€™ old Gucci handbag and a Kith x Misbhv two-piece set worn by Kylie Jenner. Itโ€™s also pretty unclear whether the money raised from these sales will go directly to the family, or to charity.

In the past, Kim has sold her clothes on eBay to benefit a number of organisations like the Childrenโ€™s Hospital in Los Angeles and the Buried Alive Project so itโ€™s quite likely theyโ€™ll be donating the proceeds to a good cause. But i’d hold off for confirmation if that’s something you care about (and let’s be honest it probably should be).

Itโ€™s not as if they didnโ€™t already have enough businesses under their belt, but the familyโ€™s decision to venture into resale with their very own company is certainly a smart one. The massive surge in the industryโ€™s mainstream popularity over the past year is not one to be ignored, especially since resale is expected to be bigger than fast fashion within the next decade and worth $51 billion in 2023. I guess weโ€™ll have to wait and see.

Update 07/10/19: Theย websiteย is now launched. Head over there to get your hands on some one-of-a-kind items ranging from pretty affordable to break your bank account.
